I have seen Schliemann's journals in person, and they are quite impressive. He changes languages just about every
paragraph, and, if I recall correctly, he writes in the language appropriate to the topic. In addition to excavation
notes, his journals include things like the ledger of what he paid the workers at his excavations, the rent that they in
turn paid for their lodging, etc. So the language could change depending on whether he was recording business
with Greeks, Turks, etc.

Here is an article on Schliemann's method of learning languages

I have always been fascinated with the guy since I was a kid. He combined my love for history and archaelogy, as well as for language learning. :)
