I'm interested in French for Reading, but I don't think the OP needs another textbook.
He should work through the courses he has first, and then take on some easier French texts (like comics, Le Petit Nicolas, etc). If after finishing what he has, he needs more help, French for Reading looks great! By the way, linguaholic_ch, since Serpent hasn't been on here yet, I'll beat her to recommending the GLOSS and lyricstraining websites for more native material practice which is usable for beginners. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

Recently I came across a French immersion video site. You basically watch videos at your own pace and pick up vocabulary along the way. Since you can't always
practice with a person, the next best thing is to get your ears used to hearing the sounds of a language. Hopefully, when you pick up enough words & phrases you'd be able to watch movies, TV and radio programs. Yabla French Video Immersion Personally I hate to rely on a textbook alone. French for Reading is not just another textbook. It's more a device for reading practice. You can use it for a while, then put it down. Then start using it again. It's a good companion for the whole of your French journey. Anyway, have a good trip. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I would not be comfortable with just Hugo and Assimil (no experience with Duolingo).
For German: Assimil is not good for proper grammatical knowledge. Hugo is too brief. Both are excellent books, but not sufficient for me. I would suggest a more detailed book to supplement Hugo and Assimil. How about Living Language Ultimate French? In the first post linguaholic made it clear that Assimil + Duolingo + Hugo were not enough for him. Emk made some good suggestions for French grammars to complete the picture for him. Living Language is probably good, but using 4 courses would be overkill. (I assume you meant LL French rather than German, since you link to a French textbook. Got German on the brain? Heh heh).
