Ripping Assimil CDs to mp3 | ||

Couldn't find this topic via a search.
Those of you who have an Assimil course with accompanying CDs- is it straightforward to just do a rip to convert them into mp3 and download onto a mp3 player? Any issues to be aware of? I don't have any use for the digital lesson files as I much prefer to study from the physical book. I ask as I was browsing for cheap Assimil courses. I have German with Ease with the mp3 version and the process of downloading from that cd was delightfully straightforward and the audio quality excellent. Buying a new pack with cds is £20/$30 cheaper than the mp3 versions. Depending on your advice, I might keep a look out for the cd versions of later target languages should they be in a sale. To rip the audio-CDs of Assimil is streightforward. I had never problems doing it (I use a program called Audiograbber, which converts them automatically).
I am astonished that new packs with audio-CDs are cheaper than the MP3 version. In their store (assimil.com) I cannot affirm this notion. PS. I've done it too on Windows 7 and Linux.
Advantages of mp3 are numerous: 1) Compact 2) On your phone, your thumb drive, and your computer. 3) Use Audacity "trucate silence" to eliminate long pauses between exercises. 4) With well thought out names, easy to store a directory so you can play the whole course in the proper order without effort (See free program DriveSort.exe for thumbdrives and smartphones). 5) Easy to track progress. I haven't used Assimil, but ripping Pimsleur CD's is pretty straight forward. Windows Media Player does a great job.

There are no particular issues, but on the mp3 cd's you get the dialogues sentence by sentence, so if that's how you like it, then you have to cut up the cd ripped files yourself (e.g. with audacity or mp3directcut.)

Cabaire- no, I'm not about to commit copyright theft! I want to buy her a real, brand new
pack. Look- nothing in my pockets! :) The prices on Assimil's website are identical for both versions. I ordered my German from The Book Depository uk website while it was 30% off. Seems you can get the French packs from some sellers on Amazon from about £35/ $55 brand new and I thought I meet keep an eye out on Ebay in case something second hand came up for myself. Shoenewaelder- I'm just using it to repeat whole lessons and use the pause button after
each sentence/part sentence. I have to admit I didn't notice that I could repeat a sentence. I'm either not drilling down low enough on my mp3 player or my player isn't letting me. So it seems the CD version, if found cheaply, would be just as useful to me. Very handy to know I have that option. Thanks very much for your replies everyone. Ah, perhaps it is the cd-rom version that does it sentence by sentence then.
