I'm going to complete an undergraduate degree in Spanish and French this fall. For the past few years, I've been considering a career in interpretation, and if possible, I'd gladly start my training at a European university. This is in large part because interpretation programs seem to be much more abundant in Europe than here in the United States, though the relatively low cost of education does, I admit, have something to do with it too. Also, were I to settle in Europe after completing my studies, I'd imagine that I'd find it slightly easier to find work simply because there's much more linguistic diversity in the continent. However, I don't know if this could ever come to be more than a pipe dream given that my native language is English and, from what I've seen, most interpretation students are expected to have their mother tongue as their sole target language. What are your thoughts on the matter? Do any of you know of any programs in Continental Europe which are focused on two-way translation? Does this all sound like nonsense to you?

Have you looked north of the border? There are a few interpretation programmes offered in Canada (though French and English are the focus here) and many governments (provincial or federal) offer full-time positions as interpreters.
