Just working locally today but there was a problem with my train which resulted in me
having to stand the 25 miles to work. I used the time to make more progress with Memrise, and am pleased to report that I have now finished the letter 'P' of my 'Teach Yourself Croatian' course and am part of the way through 'R'. On the train to work this morning I experimented with reading my PDF of the BCS
textbook on my Kindle. This would really help me to progress through it faster, but the text displays so small that it's a really struggle to read it. It's physically possible to read it, but after 10 minutes your eyes start to get tired. I managed to read part of chapter 7, but think if I do it every day there's a reasonable chance I'll go blind before I get to the end of the book. I think I need to try and find some podcasts to listen to in Croatian (or Serbian). I find that if I try to listen to the audio from my textbooks on the train I get bored and my mind drifts; listening to that works better for me when I am walking, so that the exercise occupies part of my brain and what is left is enough to concentrate on the audio without getting distracted. For sitting still, I need something more complex and/or interesting which requires me to give it my full concentration. What I would love is something like Deutsche Welle's 'Langsam gesprochene Nachrichten'. Anyhow, this evening on the train home I did some more Memrise practice. 'R' is now completely planted and I've started 'S', but that looks like another mammoth letter. I have 698 words planted now out of 980. Tonight I finished reading chapter 7 of the BCS textbook and wrote out all the C exercises. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I had a brainwave on the train this morning and changed the orientation of my Kindle to
landscape. This made it a bit easier to read the BCS textbook and I got most of the way through chapter 8 on my journey to work, but when I got as far as the exercises my Kindle decided it had had enough of this and crashed. It seems a bit temperamental around PDFs. I haven't done the exercises yet - that will be a weekend job. I decided to read an article on Deutsche Welle instead and picked the story of the day, which was "Djeca s Downovim sindromom - neistraženi potencijali". I read it through on the train and got the gist, then this evening I decided to read it again and look up some of the words I really didn't know in the dictionary. So, words I have learned today are: neistražen (unexplored) dokaz (evidence) napredovati (to advance, progress) usprkos (in spite of) činjenica (fact) pripisati (to ascribe, assign) predrasuda (preconception) ustanova (institution) udruga (association) izazov (challenge) trudnoća (pregnancy) mišića (muscle) uspomena (memory, remembrance) vršnjaka (peers) gromoglasan (stentorian) različitost (discrepancy, diversity) sažalijevati (to pity) Now if only I could remember all these tomorrow....! 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Today I had to do my homework from my Croatian class, which was to write about my
family. It sounds like a simple enough exercise, but the aim was to practise the use of the words "njegov", "njezin" and "njihov" and I found it surprisingly difficult to work these in. An added complication was trying to restrict the words/grammar I used to things we have covered in class so that other people would be able to understand when the teacher inevitably insists on writing everyone's work on the board and going through it sentence by sentence. What I came up with are possibly some of the most boring sentences ever to have to been written in Croatian!
My other half also attends the class and this week I wrote his homework for him too because he was working all weekend. His was a little less boring because his family is bigger!
The teacher had suggested that we write the sentences without using the correct case endings but that just strikes me as horrific. I may have got some of them wrong, but at least I have tried! Having got that chore out of the way, I returned to my BCS textbook and wrote out the exercises from chapters eight and nine. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

This morning I went through chapter ten of the BCS textbook and wrote out the C
exercises. This chapter had a good section on aspect and some exercises to practise choosing the correct verb, which was really useful for me. I was surprised that I got most of them right because there were a lot where I wasn't very confident. This afternoon I added the vocab lists from chapter 11 and chapter 12 of the textbook to Memrise so that I can learn the words in advance of doing the exercises. These chapters look really good so I'm trying to restrain myself from reading ahead so that I can retain some excitement for them. I'm still stuck in the middle of learning the vocab from TYC on Memrise at the moment so I think I need to make an effort to get through all that remains this week so that I can concentrate on the BCS vocab (which is more challenging, and therefore more useful). I probably know 90% of the TYC vocabulary by heart already, but I want to get bitter end of the Memrise course so that I can be confident that I know it all actively rather than just passively. There is also the odd word which I have completely missed in the text and which comes to be as a surprise, like "pritisnuti", so it is worth doing for that too. Today I have spent about an hour on it and got through all of 'S' and 'Š'. I've planted 822 out of 980 words now so the end is in sight. Later on I watched this week's Croatian EuroBox on Deutsche Welle. The themes included the Ukrainian far right, members of the Bulgarian Orthodox church who had worked for the secret services under communism and bureaucratic problems faced by Romanians moving to Germany. I feel like I've made good progress this weekend and just wish that I had a couple of spare hours every day to study. It's been a nice weekend in general, which may or may not be linked to the fact that it has been Esperanto-less ;) 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

They do a new programme in Croatian every Wednesday so this was the one from 19 March. On the homepage I can scroll back as far as the episode from 5 February, so they definitely leave them up for a few weeks. The other topics were Madrid's slums and a man who makes pizzas with famous people's faces on (very bizarre!). 2 persons have voted this message useful | ||||||

I had bad luck on the way to work this morning when it turned out that the bus I had been
planning to catch had been cancelled. That meant I had 40 minutes standing outside in the cold waiting for the next one, but every cloud has a silver lining and I was able to spent the time on Memrise. The result is that I have now planted all of 'T', 'U', 'V', 'Z' and 'Ž' from the 'Teach Yourself Croatian' course, so I have officially finished with that book :) This evening was my Croatian lesson. The teacher forgot what she'd asked us to do for homework, so my boring sentences were wasted. We learned some vocabulary about clothes and shopping, which was fine. Attendance at the class is gradually reducing though; we started the year with eight and I think there are now only four of us left. 1 person has voted this message useful |
