Oh my goodness! How horrible, but so happy you and yours are safe.
I consider this an excellent excuse not to watch films...not that you needed one ;-).
So sorry you went through that...

Thanks guys :)
It wasn't a nice experience but it could have been so much worse if a neighbour hadn't been going to work early, seen the fire and woken us up so we could get out of the house. The insurance company are going to cover the damage so now it's just a case of waiting until we can have the repairs done and get some power back. The electricity cables going into the house melted during the fire, so it may take some time to sort out!
I think I would be too scared to read by candlelight now in case I start another fire. But reading by torchlight may be the way forward :D

I think you might confuse some Americans with "torchlight" since that is the thing Indiana Jones sets fire to and goes through cobweb infested caves.

I admit that I did a bit of a double-take until I quickly recalled a passage from one of C.S. Lewis' books where one of the characters mentioned that he didn't want to overuse the torchlight that he had got as a birthday gift lest the battery be drained.
Now I just see a bit of levity in Radioclare's original statement.

Okay, I think we have established that I'm not very good at watching films, so you probably won't be surprised to know that I've never seen Indiana Jones!
I was trying to refer to a portable battery-powered light; what would you call that in America?

Wow okay, I have to admit I have never heard of that! I am so bad at US English. I once read a novel where one of the characters spent their time writing on a 'nickel tablet' and for years I assumed that he had been engraving his thoughts on a big slab of metal.

I've not seen Indiana Jones either but yeah I take the torch part too literally when I see this word :D
A book light can be a useful investment btw? You can also use it when your partner is asleep for example.
