Oh, that's right. I just remembered that I've already seen in Penguin Russian course that construction of на + [locative] to identify explicitly the means of transportation.
In any case, the point remains that the Russian pair of verbs distinguishes between vehicular and non-vehicular motion while BCMS/SC doesn't have such a pair. The construction with самый is indeed used frequently and rather easy for me to grasp, but it just wasn't what I had expected after being "raised" only on Slavonic languages which rely heavily on naj-/nej- + [comparative form]. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I got back from Sardinia on Sunday night. It was an amazing holiday and far more relaxing than travelling in Serbia etc :) I had lots of good resolutions of things I was going to do when I got back but they were thrown off course somewhat by my first day back at work, which ended up with me not getting home until after 8pm. Bah, humbug!
All I managed to do last night was get back up-to-date with my Memrise watering, which had slipped back to 390 unwatered while I was away. This morning I have started reading another Ken Follet book in Serbian: "Rajski čekić". I think in English it's called "The Hammer of Eden". As far as I can understand so far, it's about a man who learns how to cause earthquakes. If it's anywhere near as good his other books that I've read, it should be exciting :) 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

Horrible, horrible week. Nothing has gone right and I only got home before 8pm tonight
because my boyfriend came and rescued me. I have read 40-odd pages of "Rajski čekić" so far and it's okay, but it hasn't grabbed me right from the start like the other Ken Follett books have. But I've been having so many travel problems on my commute this week that I probably haven't given it a fair chance yet. I spent 30 minutes this evening on Memrise. Somehow having ignored it for a day I ended up with 400 unwatered again. Think I probably need to think about giving up on some courses. I had an advert saying that Memrise Premium is available now, but haven't figured out yet exactly what it is and whether it would be worth the money. I watched one episode of 'Bitange i Princeze' yesterday and will hopefully fit another in before I go to bed tonight. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

If it seems like I haven't updated my log very often this week, it's because I feel
like I haven't achieved much. It's been a hectic week, trying to catch up on everything that went wrong at work while I was away, while working at a client premises where I couldn't access the internet and which necessitated long and frustrating commutes. Hopefully next week will be better! In terms of what I have achieved... I decided to sign up for Memrise Premium to see what it was like. Having seen what it's like, it's probably not worth as much money as they are trying to sell it for. There is a 30-day money back guarantee so I may cancel or I may just leave it as a donation, because I do feel Memrise has been incredibly beneficial for me over the past year. Probably the most useful feature is that it identifies the words you are finding most difficult in each course. Having looked at what it has identified for me, I've realised that they are not words which I am actually finding difficult, but words which I keep getting wrong because there is another word with a similar definition in one of my courses. Perhaps this will give me to motivation to go through and tidy up the definitions so that I don't keep making the same mistakes! The other benefit is that it tells you how long you have spent learning in a given week. This week I have been learning for 1 hour and 32 minutes. As far as the Super Challenge goes, I am now on page 145 of 'Rajski čekić'. In total I have 670 pages for Tadoku, so I still have quite a bit of reading to do if I want to hit my target of 1000 before the end of the month. I got a bit out of the habit of watching films while I was on holiday. This week I have only watched two episodes of 'Bitange i Princeze'. Last night I decided to rewatch 'Pjevajte Nesto Ljubavno', which is a film I watched towards the start of the Super Challenge and the only film I have watched so far that I have actually enjoyed. I recommend that everyone watches it, even if you don't understand Croatian, because it has a really cool soundtrack and the lead actor, Ivan Herceg, is really, really hot :D The first time I watched it for the challenge, I felt really bad because all I understood were swear words. Having watched it a second time, I can report that my knowledge of Croatian swearing has increased and I understood even more of them. I did of course understand some of the dialogue too, though still not all of it, but I don't feel so bad about it this time because I read a few reviews in Croatian and people were complaining that the film was full of Zagreb slang. I was particularly pleased that I understood when one character said that she was "u drugom stanju" (pregnant), which I only knew because I did a Serbian GLOSS lesson which happened to be about pregnancy a few weeks ago. The strangest thing about the film was that I realised I recognised many of the actors. I mean, anyone who is following this log knows that I haven't exactly watched vast quantities of Croatian films, so I think the pool of Croatian film stars must be quite small. Four of the actors I recognised were from 'Bitange i Princeze', which isn't so much of a coincidence as it sounds, because both the film and the TV series are named after songs by my favourite Croatian band, Hladno Pivo, and their lead singer has guest roles in both. One of the actresses was definitely the lead actress from a film called 'Korak po Korak' which I struggled through a few months ago, and both she and the actor who was playing her husband in this film had been in the theatre production of 'Galeb' which I saw in Nottingham last May. Yesterday was a really busy day. Lots of housework to do, and also there was an Esperanto trustee meeting on Saturday so I had a few action points to follow up on. It's looking like we will be able to offer a session of the written CEFR exams at our conference in April 2015 :)
I have read another 35 pages of 'The Hammer of Eden'. I'm learning a lot of vocabulary relating to earthquakes and not sure how useful it's going to be. In the evening I relaxed with three episodes (108 minutes) of 'Bitange i Princeze'. That takes me up to the end of Series 3. I'm on page 236 of 'Rajski čekić' now so making good progress :)
Last night I watched the first episode of series 4 of 'Bitange i Princeze'. It picked up right where the final episode of series 3 had left off, which was good because it was really exciting. There seemed to be a big gap between the end of series 2 and the start of series 3 and I spent half of series 3 trying to understand what was supposed to have happened in that intervening period. I'm considering whether to sign up for the 6WC with Croatian but haven't decided yet. On the one hand I want to, because although I'm doing some SC stuff every day, I'm not doing a whole lot else. I do have lots more things I want to achieve with Croatian before the end of the year, so I feel like the 6WC might give me the motivation I need to crack on with them. On the other hand, it's over two years since I've been learning Croatian now and I'm reading a lot of books in it, so I'm not sure whether I qualify as enough of a beginner to comply with the rules of the challenge. Hmm. Last night I made the mistake of looking at the ranking for the SC and I realised that there is someone who is on the verge of finishing the challenge... in Japanese.... despite only having started it a month ago.
