GERMAN
Pimsleur Plus - Finished lesson 7 today, felt good about it

Hugo - No Hugo today.

Assimil - Just finished the 49th lesson (review). I went back and read lessons 43-48 out loud. I went back and quickly read lessons 1-10 for unknown vocab to put into Quizlet for the Active Wave, but I had nothing to put in. That's a good sign haha.

2014 SUPER CHALLENGE
I didn't have time today to read or watch anything new. I read over some old Assimil lessons but I won't count those since I've already done them before.

2014 SUPER CHALLENGE

I will count each Assimil lesson as 1 page and each short story as a 1/2 page (unless it is long enough). This will include anything from my readers and articles, since I'm not at the capacity to read full books yet.

I hope this is okay; I posted this as a question on the discussion thread and it seems to have been overlooked, but I want to get started.

I would double check if Assimil lessons count towards the reading part. The initial idea was very simple: read books, watch movies. The idea was to improve your language skills by actively using native materials (i.e., not textbooks). So counting Assimil lessons goes against the initial challenge. However, this year a lot more seems to count (which in my opinion is a shame) so perhaps Assimil also counts.

I wouldn't sell yourself short. I started the first challenge when I was A1 and ended up reading 10000 pages and watching 300 films before it was over.

Pat, you've inspired me to alter how I will approach the challenge. I will now make it native material only, except for the readers. So no more Assimil and I won't count the short stories at the end of Hugo. I did feel like I was cheating with Assimil, since I'd be doing them anyway so it wasn't really any extra effort.

Good luck. There is something very satisfying with reading non-textbooks. I would recommend getting a cheap Kindle (NOT the Paperwhite) and the Collins German-English dictionary. Then you should be able to start working through simple books like those in the Percy Jackson or Harry Potter series. If it's too hard yet, you will certainly be able to start within the next three months.

I looked the Percy Jackson books on amazon.de and I should definitely be able to read them (with aid of a dictionary). I own a tablet with a Kindle app, but I think I'd prefer buying the physical book (just personal preference).

Do you know if I can order from amazon.de, even though I live in the US? Would it recognize my amazon.com account and handle all of the currency conversions internally, or would I have to make another account?

There was a discussion about this some time ago and forget the exact details.

There is an interesting distinction between paper books and e-books. With paper books the rights to resell rest with the bookstore (Amazon, a bookstore in Berlin etc), but with ebooks the rights rest with the original agreement written between the publisher and the authors. So unless an ebook has a specific license to be able to be sold to the US then you won't be able to buy the e-book from either Amazon.com or Amazon.de. There should be no restrictions on the paper book though.

All books available to you from Amazon.de should also be available to you from Amazon.com I think. Do a search on Amazon.com for something like "Percy Jackson" and "German edition".

Thanks Pat! I'll definitely start with the Percy Jackson books once I finish my reader, which shouldn't be too long (maybe a month maximum if I read every day).
============================================================ ==================
Had a 10.5 hour workday today, so I was pretty tired when I got home but I did get some work done.

DEUTSCH
Pimsleur Plus - Finished lesson 8 today

Hugo - No hugo. No time.

Assimil - I finished lesson 50 and did lesson 1 on the active phase. I really like this new approach, but it takes a lot longer. Over an hour to finish both parts.

Cafe in Berlin (Reader) - I read the first and second stories. This is my first time actually using this book (I've had it for a few months) and I really like it. It's not really hard but it's good for developing a flow to reading without having to look up words constantly.

2014 SUPER CHALLENGE
As stated, I'm not counting any of the dialogues from my lesson books (Assimil and Hugo) toward my reading, so I'm omitting them from my counters. I wanted to watch some stuff on ZDF but I didn't have time. I read two stories in my reader, which equated to about 2 pages.

Another long day, but I surprisingly got a lot of German done.

DEUTSCH
Pimsleur - Finished lesson 9

Hugo - No Hugo

Assimil - Finished lesson 51 and translated lesson 2

Live Lesson - Good lesson today; went over some fine grammatical points, did some speaking.

2014 SUPER CHALLENGE
I wanted to do some reading but it's too late. Tomorrow I'll have more time so I'll try to get some done, along with watching some shows.
