E aí, Exploradores! Preparados para mais um ano de batalhas lingüísticas?
Acabei de chegar da Chapada Diamantina. É uma região rica em história e em paisagens, e fica no coração da Bahia. Fiz alguns bons passeios, e outros não foram possíveis, mas no geral a viagem valeu muito a pena. Fiquei hospedado na cidade de Lençóis. Se quiserem, posso contar mais detalhes. Alright, here is three sentence attempt in my very basic Portuguese: Chapada Diamantina é um parque nacional no Brasil, no estado de Bahia. Eu quer visita o parque por que eu amo natureza. Também eu amo caminhar. A quick question with this, in term of say "in" how does one know to differentiate between na/no and em, and other words like it? Is there a rule to follow? Let me address this one: you have to see things in context. When there's some sort of significance, you have to use the corresponding article: A terra do pau-brasil => o pau-brasil => o Brasil; A terra onde os portugueses chegaram em 1 de janeiro de 1502 e pensaram tratar-se dum rio => o Rio de Janeiro; Uma terra em Portugal que era um porto romano => o Porto; Uma baía onde Pedro Álvares Cabral aportou em 1500 => a Bahia (old Portuguese); Terras descobertas no dia de Natal => o Natal. Some exceptions (if I'm not mistaken): you don't say "o Porto Seguro", nor "as Minas Gerais". Sometimes, you don't have an article: Portugal, Marrocos, Lisboa, Paris, Londres (in fact, most cities), places named after saints (São Paulo, Salvador,...). N.B.: I corrected your text. In Portugal (and, I think, in Brazil too) we reserve the words "amar", "amo" to persons (and only in special cases). In other contexts, we prefer to say "gostar de" or (rarely) "adorar". I understand the corrections to my sentences. as to the articles and the place names... I'm trying to wrap my he'd around... so basically only certain place names have an article? and for all those others you'd use "em"? or am I hitting it way off... 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Yes, in some cases you only use the preposition, but it's not bound to always be "em". This is a different question, though. Depending on context, you might have: - A Chapada Diamantina fica no Brasil. => it's (in) there. - Eu vou ao Brasil. => presumably, I'll be back. - Eu vou para o Brasil. => presumably, I'm going to stay there. Eu acho que vale a pena conhecer a Chapada Diamantina, é maravilhosa. Esta região tem belas paisagens e cachoeiras. Encontrei um comentário em um blog que descrevo exatamente a minha opinião sobre este lugar: "Deu uma vontade danada de conhecer esse paraíso." :P Sorry, I haven't tried writing anything in Portuguese for ages.
