This is my first post, and my first language log. I want to record my progress in Japanese, Bulgarian, and Chinese for
this upcoming school year. I have a lot going on, including college applications and regular school work that I have
to do, but want to work on these languages. I hope that it will inspire myself and others to keep trying to reach our
goals!

Self-study Language Goals:

Japanese: I have been studying Japanese for about four years now. I took three years of it in school, and took
a trip to Japan on the third year for two weeks during the summer. During the summer of my first year, I did a lot of
self-study. Last year, I changed schools and it was a challenge to keep up my studies. I took a few classes in it at the
Community College, but wasn't learning anything new. Currently, I am self-studying. My biggest goal is to learn as
much as I can this year on my own before I go to University.

To achieve this, I plan to actively study Japanese. This means I'll try to study at least once every week. I have been
stuck in the "intermediate" level for too long, so I hope to finally pull myself out of it and become a more advanced
Japanese speaker and writer.

My goals for each week:
(input)
- Read challenging Japanese text
- Explore new grammar/vocabulary from textbooks
- Learn 20 vocabulary words via Quizlet or by other means
- Pimsleur
- An occasional J-drama/movie/anime (maybe not every week)
(output)
- Write an entry in Japanese on Lang-8
- Read out loud
- Do grammatical exercises

Bulgarian: I just started actively studying Bulgarian this summer. I've gone through the UniLang course, most
of the Bulgarian pod 101 (podcasts), and am now trying out the FSI Bulgarian course. I'm on Unit 2. It seems to be
working pretty well for me so far.

My goals for each week:
(input)
- Listen to and read a part in the FSI course (until all vocabulary/phrases are known)
- Listen to Bulgarian media (I'm open to suggestions if anyone knows anything English subbed)
(output)
- Write down and repeat everything aloud from FSI course
- Write an occasional Lang-8 entry (probably not every week until I am more advanced)

Language Class Goals:

Mandarin: I am a complete beginner in Mandarin, but will take a class this semester. My goals for this language is to
simply get the most out of the class that I can. I will post updates of progress as I go along.

(output)

Bulgarian:

Week 2 (8/24/14):

Japanese:
(input)
- I read aloud some more of the Kamisama story in "Read Real Japanese"
- I watched a Hikakin TV video (youtube channel)
- I reviewed words from the section N5 1-100 on the Real Kanji flashcard site
(output)
- I wrote a lang-8 entry about hamsters in Japanese

Bulgarian:
(input and output)
- I listened to, repeated, and wrote down things from the Bulgarian FSI course (regular routine)

ASL:
-I went to two ASL classes this week. I learned about the kinds of things we will be doing in the class. We only had
the interpreter for this week, so from now on we will have to learn not to speak but to sign only. Seems like a
challenge, but also a lot of fun!

I made it to week 2 and then I got bogged down with tons of homework, so I had to take a break from languages for
a while. However, I've been studying ASL this whole time.

Week 3 (8/31/14) - Week 6 (9/21/14):

Japanese: No progress (besides watching Junjou Romantica….)

Bulgarian: No progress

ASL:
-Went to two classes each week. We learned more basic signs such as the days of the week, random vocabulary, and
a lot of review and practice.

Good luck with your studies and with all of your languages! It looks like you chose a very interesting combination. If you need any advice with Bulgarian, I'd be glad to help.
