Its been a long time since my last post and I'm ashamed to admit that I have
made very little progress in FSI French.
There is some good news however. I am reading the first Harry Potter book in
French. I have tried reading similar books in the past but I never got
further than the first few pages. This time around, I have finished the
first four chapters in the last 2 weeks.
Wish me luck.

Impressive! I very much enjoyed reading Harry Potter in French – I found that it supplied a lot of fun (magical) and useful (conversational) vocabulary. It's also cool to see where the translator has made creative choices regarding names and so on.

I am pleased to report that I have finished the first book in the Harry
Potter series: 'Harry Potter à l'école des sorciers.'
In the beginning, I had to look up the meaning of every other word. But,
towards the end, I began to really enjoy the story. This is probably because
I did not have to look up too many words. To be honest, I did have to read
a couple of sentences more than once to get the gist. This probably means
that I still need a lot more practice.
I will start reading the second book tonight. Wish me luck :-)

Good luck! That's quite an achievement. I know I couldn't make it through Harry Potter yet.

I spent a week at a place where I did not have any access to the internet. I
had no real choice. I could not but read the book. I had to do something to
pass the time. :-)
That's what got me started.

Just finished the second book. I think I will stay away from Harry Potter
for some time. I have had all the magic that I can handle. :-)
I have had my sights set on Ender's Game for quite some time now. Its time
for me to read some science fiction for a change.
P.S. Need to restart FSI

Although Ender's Game is significantly shorter than the last book I read,
the language is a lot more difficult.
Especially where the author ruminates on the nature of life, love, the
difference between good and evil and what not. I enjoyed it in English, but
reading it in French is quite challenging at my current level.

Finally finished: 'La Stratégie Ender'! It seems that the more I
read, the better I can understand spoken french.
