TAC 2014 (Team Gumiho) starts on page 7. Original First Post: I posted a log here about 1.5 years ago. I'm starting a new log because my old log is painfully out of date and just about Korean. This log will be about all of my language studies. Some basic information: I'm from the USA but I've lived in Korea for almost four years. In university I majored in Russian and minored in French. I wasn't particularly good at either language, so it's not a big surprise that I've forgotten everything. I can read well enough, sort of, but my active skills are gone. Since I came to Korea I've studied Korean on and off using various textbooks. I would study hard for a couple months and then spend half a year doing nothing. Earlier this year I started studying with a tutor and my Korean has improved significantly. Next year I plan on moving to Seoul and studying at a language program there, with the goal of attending graduate school for Korean Literature after that. Recently I came to the conclusion that I wanted to learn a new language, but before I do that I want to resurrect my Russian and French first. I also realized that I don't want active skills in every language I learn. I want to read books and watch TV without subtitles. So that will be my goal for these additional languages. My next post will be about my current study methods, and after that I'll post maybe once a week describing my studies. Here's a description of my current study methods.
Korean I am studying the 서강 4A textbook with my tutor. We meet twice a week for 1-1.5 hours and she assigns me homework ranging from workbook pages to writing assignments. We only speak in Korean and do the exercises in the textbook together, as well as work on other materials she provides. Talktomeinkorean.com 이야기s. I listen, then read, then listen while reading, then learn the vocabulary and grammar I don't know, then listen and listen and read at least twice a day for a week after that. 연세 한국어 읽기 3. I read the story, learn the new vocabulary, read the story again, do the workbook pages, and move on. This is spread out over 2 days. Reading. I just finished a manhwa about the Yeosu Expo. I understood maybe... 40%? Now I'm working on 어린왕자, The Little Prince. I want to read a little every day. I also read a webtoon called 그녀는 흡!혈귀 while I'm on the bus. My comprehension level for that webtoon is around 75%. Music. My friends and I learn Korean songs and go to noraebangs to sing/practice them. I also learn some vocabulary while I'm at it. I want to focus more on actually learning what the songs mean instead of just learning how to sing them... TV. I try to watch dramas, but I can't make it more than 10 episodes before growing bored. I'll work on that. I'd like to rip the audio from an interesting drama and start listening to it. I also need to stop using subtitles... or find Korean subtitles instead. I have a number of Korean friends and we text on Kakao in Korean, and when we meet we talk in Korean (well, it depends on the friend). I also hear Korean on a daily basis since, y'know, I live here. Oh, I also use Anki daily. French Today was my first day of French. I am using Assimil French With Ease, starting from the beginning, and using the instructions found here. I've never used Assimil before, so it'll be interesting. I flipped forward and I actually understand most of French With Ease, and also quite a bit from Using French. I want to start at the beginning just to make sure I build up a strong base again before I move on. I'm also using an Anki deck with each sentence listed on each card. Yeah, I know, it's against the Assimil method, but whatever. Anki works well for me. If Assimil works well I'll use it for my Russian as well. If all goes as planned I'll pick up Russian halfway through the French active wave (about 85 days from now). 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I thought the screen name looked familliar. Welcome back. :)
I did that with 내 여자친구는 구미호 and rather enjoyed it. I tried to do the same with Secret Garden and stopped as it wasn't as interesting in audio form. At least in the first episode, there seemed to be too many action sequences and the like which have no dialog at all, so I quickly grew bored of listening to it.

이야기 1: 노약좌석 (11 new words) 연세 읽기: 이사 떡 - pages 32-37 (11 new words) The Little Prince: read chapters 2-8 (a billion new words, but I haven't looked up any of them) Various pages in 서강4A (about 30 new words) Grammar: -ㄹ 수도 있다 (might, could) - 내일 지훈하고 다시 만날 수도 있어요. -자마자 (as soon as) - 유진이 저를 처음 보자마자 소리치기 시작했어요. Phrases - 꾹 참다 - to suffer patiently, to bite the bullet 벌떡 일어나다 - to spring to one's feet, to rise suddenly 죽은 척하다 - to play dead I studied a lot of Korean this week. The new term started up today so I may not be able to keep up this pace, but I'll darn well try. It's been a bad week for speaking - the words just aren't coming to my mouth - but my writing has been improving, probably because my tutor assigns a a writing assignment due every lesson. Below is one of my assignments. (The other one is, frankly, better, but this is what I have available at the moment...) 수필 - 특벽한 취미 우리 어머니께서는 특별한 취미가 있어요. 그 취미는 미니어처를 만들기예요. 제가 어렸을 때 우리 어머니께서 미니어처를 만들기 시작했어요. 처음에는 취미 가게에서 인형의 집 세트를 사서 집에서 조립했어요. 조립하기 전에 저와 제 친구들이 그 인형의 집을 꾸몄어요. 방 벽에 색칠하고 천으로 카펫을 만들었어요. 그리고 나서 우리 어머니께서는 젓가락으로 가구를 만드셨고 그 다음에 저와 어머니는 가구를 페인트를 칠했어요. 한참 미니어처에 대해 잡지를 읽고 인터넷 카페에서도 읽었어요. 제가 대학교에 있을 때에 우리 어머니께서 미니어처 컨벤션에 처음으로 가기 시작하게 됐어요. 그 곳에서 우리 어머니께서 미니어처 방을 만들었어요. 일본 전통 방이나 옛날 영국 호프나 귀여운 사람을 만들었어요. 컨벤션에는 각국 사람들이 많아서 우리 어머니께서 재미있는 사람을 만날 수 있어요. 요즘에는 제가 한국에 살아서 어머니를 도와드릴 수 없지만 찍은 사진을 보고 색깔에 대해 조언을 해요. French Assimil, lessons 1-8 I said in my last post that I was doing Anki for French. I've decided against doing it because I screwed up the tags and, well, I understand everything anyways... In lesson 6 they taught about de, de la, des, and - most importantly - that you must always use de after the negative. I studied this language for over 8 years in school and apparently I missed the memo on that. This is why I wanted to start French over from scratch: so I could relearn all of the basic rules that I ignored the first time around. (I was not, shall we say, the most attentive student.) Interestingly, I'm understanding most of the dialogues on the first listen. My listening comprehension even when I was at my best was not terribly strong. I know the speakers are deliberately speaking slowly and the words used are quite easy, but I'm pleased that I remember this much! I'm doing two additional things: 1) I am shadowing the speakers about 2-3 times. 2) I am writing out the exercises by hand. 내 여자친구는 구미호 was the first drama I ever watched to completion and I really liked it.
There are scripts of most, if not all, of the popular dramas out there, but I'm not really sure where to find them as I haven't really obtained any myself. Just a mid-week update.
1. I found some scripts for SBS dramas. Here's the website. It's the official SBS site. You have to click on the drama you want to watch, then click 자막보기 (view subtitles/captions). Now I have to figure out how to sync up these subtitles with the drama itself. I'm excited to see how much of a drama I'll understand if I can read along while the characters speak! 2. Okay, so I'm about 11 lessons into Assimil French and I think it's fantastic. Today's lesson included the difference between savoir and connaître - knowing a thing/information vs. knowing a person/place. I really think that it has the potential to improve my language ability - a lot. HOWEVER, this is coming from someone who studied the language for over 8 years and can pick up Le Monde and understand over 50% of any given article even today. I don't know how good this program would be for someone who is starting from scratch. I'm not the sort of person who can learn just from reading and listening, and that seems to be what the passive stage is all about. It seems kind of unintuitive to wait so long to work on active skills. I don't know. I could be full of nonsense. I don't think I'd feel comfortable using this as my first and primary learning method for a language from a language family I've never studied before. But that's not really an issue at the moment, nor will it be in the near future. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

연세 읽기: 우리 동네 슈퍼 이야기; word learned: 18 서강4A words learned: 36 (finished chapter 2, started chapter 3) 이야기 #2: words learned: 2 어린 왕자: read chapters 9-16 Words/phrases of note: -기로 마음먹다 - to make up one's mind 기아로 죽다 - to starve to death I actually understood almost everything in the 이야기 on my first listen. It may be due to how much 선현우 spoke. I wouldn't say that he dumbs down his speech for the listeners, but he definitely knows how to speak at an "intermediate" level without losing his grammar or reverting to baby-talk. As an ESL teacher I know how rare this ability is. Reading the Little Prince has actually gotten easier. I first read the chapter in English and then I read it in Korean. I'm starting to figure out words from context (for example: 지리학자, 탐험가, 명령). Of course, all of those words are passive at the moment, but one day I'll hopefully have the chance to activate them. Below are a couple short texts I wrote for class this week. 수필 1. 역사 이전의 장소를 볼 수 있다면 언제 어디로 가겠어요? 저는 지구에 미래에 도해 보고 싶어요. 왜냐하면 역사 이전의 장소에 가는 것은 관심이 없어요. 옛날의 생활은 어려웠어요. 화장실이 밖에 있고 실내에 화장실이 없었어요. 매일 새벽부터 황혼까지 일해야 됐어요. 제가 부자였으면 생활이 좋았을지도 몰라요. 옛날에 돈이 많았으면 여행도 쉽게 갈 수 있고 음식도 살 수 있을 거예요. 여행하려면 돈을 벌어야 되지만 특별한 능력이 없어서 가난했을 거예요. 미래로 간다면 아이들하고 손자들도 볼 수 있을 거예요. 지구 온난화의 결과도 보고 싶어요. 결과를 알 수 있으면 다른 곳으로 이사하거나 땅을 사서 미래를 준비해요. 그리고 우리 생활을 알고 싶어요. 어디에 사거나 직업이뭐 하거나 몇 개 언어를 배울 거예요? 2. 한비야 씨는 등산과 요가로 건강 관리를 했고 여행을 준비하려고 경비를 모았어요. 한비야 씨는 소 똥으로 만든 집에서 머물렀어요. 소 똥 때문에 고생을 한 적도 있고 말라리아 약을 먹었는데 그 약이 독해서 앞았어요. 그리고 장의차를 탄 적도 있고 마라톤 대회에서 50등을 해서 신문에 났어요. 이 것들이 즐거움이라고 했어요. 한비야 씨는 여행 중 기아로 죽는 아이들을 보고 아이들에게 식사를 제공하기로 마음먹었어요. 한비야 씨가 도보 여행을 통해서 자기 자신과 사귈 수 있다고 했어요. French Assimil lessons 9-16 Things I should work on: remembering the gender of nouns. Korean and Russian have spoiled me... I haven't had to remember this in years. I'm just making 0-2 mistakes per lesson, which isn't bad. My French accent is returning! I'm not fumbling quite as much when I repeat words. All that money I spent on that upper-level French phonetics class wasn't wasted after all! I know I've said this before, and I'm sure I'll say it again - this program will work wonders for my passive skills, but I just don't see how it'll improve my active skills. Admittedly, I'm only 16 lessons into the program, so we'll see what happens when I start the active wave. 1 person has voted this message useful |
