Yeah, I was talking about cartoons with a few of my (foreign) friends and they mentioned it, too. According to Wikipedia it's originally a Japanese cartoon, the same as 괴담레스토랑. That's one good thing about 장금이의 꿈: it's very, very Korean.

Korean - Ewha 4: 71 words - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire vol. 3: 277-301 (끝) - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire vol. 4: 11-96 - 장금이의 꿈: 7-12 - wrote 1 개요 and a short essay French - Quatre ou double by Janet Evanovich: 256-325 (fin) - Cinq à sexe by Janet Evanovich: 1-30 - Le journal en français facile: 6 - Kaamelott: 113-154 I've really amped up the Harry Potter reading this week- I've done an average of about 18 pages a day, which is pretty good. I do about 12 pages in a big bulk bit of a reading and sporadically read more throughout the day. I'm optimistic that I'll be able to finish the book by August 4th, which is the day vacation starts. I really, really hate 장금이의 꿈. I'll admit it: I space out through most of the episodes because they're so damn boring. I know, I know. Occasionally when I pay attention I understand a bit. I should probably find a new way to get listening practice (학교괴담?) but I'd like to finish this first. Kaamelott has been going well. I find that there are some words I've been able to pick up through context but there are a lot of words that are a bit above my level. I'm not sure how to go about learning these slightly more advanced words. Another textbook? Sitting and translating each individual word? French isn't quite as important as Korean is right now, so for the time being I'm going to see if learning through context will eventually extend to these unknown words. It might take a while/a lot of TV shows, but I think it has the potential to work out in the long run. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

Korean - Ewha 4: 55 words - Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire vol. 4: 97-235 - 장금이의 꿈: 13-17 - talked with friends French - Cinq à sexe by Janet Evanovich: 31-120 - Le journal en français facile: 6 - Kaamelott: 1x57-1x90 I picked up the pace of my Korean reading even more this week - 20 pages every day. I read 20 pages a day back in February and it was painful; it took forever and I had a lot of trouble understanding what was going on. This time around it's not terribly time consuming and my head isn't throbbing by the end of the day. Progress! I'll be finished by the end of the week. I had my last tutoring session yesterday, although I do have homework to do by email tonight. I started going to tutoring in March 2013 and it really sparked a lot of self-change. A tutor helps you stay motivated and makes sure you're attacking the language in the right way. I've treated my tutoring sessions as a way to reinforce the grammar and vocabulary that I've already taught myself at home. You may think you understand the grammar or the texts in your book when you do it yourself, but going over it with a native speaker gives you confirmation and clarification that is not otherwise present. I'm glad I've done tutoring and I'd be willing to do it again in the future with another language. My updates for the next month may not be very regular, since I'll be on vacation. I don't know if I'll be studying during that time, but I'll try to do a bit, just for the sake of continuity. It's been pretty crazy so I haven't been able to update. I was more or less able to study daily while visiting my family. Nothing active, just reading, but that's quite enough, I think! I am surrounded by people from a huge number of different countries. Unfortunately most of them aren't at the conversational Korean level yet, so I've been forced to use English. I am, however, neighbors with a Belgian who primarily speaks French and I've been hanging out with central Asians (from Kyrgyzstan/Kazakhstan/Uzbekistan) who speak Russian, so I'm getting some listening practice in that way. I'm pretty sure that once classes start (... two weeks from now ㅠㅠ) I'll have more opportunities to use my Korean. At least, that's what I'm hoping. Until then I'm going to have to fix up a study schedule that will fit into my attempts at having a social life. One interesting thing relating to studying is that I've started translating a children's book I've had for a few years, 열두 띠 동물 동화. Last year I tried reading it/learning every word I didn't know in it... which didn't go so well. My level is much higher now and it's proving to be a good review of vocabulary and grammar, and I've also been able to learn expressions/words that I haven't encountered yet. Here's an example of my translation. Corrections/thoughts would certainly be appreciated! 아가토끼가 막 몸부림치니까 토끼를 잡으려고 애쓰던 할아버지가 토끼 오줌에 미끄러지고 말았어. Because the baby rabbit was wiggling, the grandfather, who had tried to grab the rabbit, slipped in the pee and fell. 아가 토끼는 냅다 달리기 시작했지. The baby rabbit started to run hard. 할아저비가 부지런히 쫓아가는데, 울타리 사이에 끼고 말았네. The grandfather diligently ran after him but was caught in the fence and fell. 그 틈에 할아버지가 덥석 토끼 다리를 붙잡았지. At that time, the grandfather had jumped at the rabbit's leg. 그런데 토끼가 방긋 웃으며 이렇게 말하는 거야. But the rabbit said this with a smile. “할아벼지, 나를 잡으려면 내 다리를 잡아야지 왜 울타리를 잡으세요?” “Grandfather, if you want to catch me, you should grab my leg. Why are you grabbing the fence?” 할아버지는 얼른 토끼 다리를 놓고 옆쪽의 울타리를 잡았지 뭐야. The grandfather promptly let go of the rabbit's leg and grabbed the side of the fence. “할아벼지! 내 다리 여기 있는데! 내 다린 여기 있지!” “Grandfather! My leg is here! My leg is right here!” 신이 난 아가토끼는 깡충깡충 뛰어서 달아났지. Korean - translated 16 pages of 열두 띠 동물 동화 - reviewed TTMIK --> 3-15, 3-17, 3-18, 3-20, 3-22, 3-25 --> 4-1, 4-4, 4-6, 4-8, 4-9, 4-11, 4-15, 4-16, 4-24 --> 5-4, 5-5, 5-7, 5-8, 5-9, 5-15 - learned the grammar 리가 없다 (4-3) and 뻔했다 (5-1) - watched 게임의 제왕: 1 episode - talked with friends in Korean French - Le journal en français facile: 1 Studying has not gone super well this week because I don't have a set schedule/routine yet. Some days I have hours to spare, other days I decide that pretending I'm a social person is more important. A short discussion about my scholarship program: I find this program to be very interesting because everyone comes from such disparate backgrounds and a good 75% of the people here speak English as a second or third language to varying degrees of fluency. My experience as an English teacher is proving to be useful as I am able to communicate my point to everyone, regardless of English ability. I frequently find myself wanting to break into Korean to express my point more clearly, however very few of the people here would be able to understand me... yet. My current language idol is a new friend from Malaysia, who speaks fluent English and Mandarin and very advanced Korean. She intends on doing translation/interpretation between her three languages, which blows my mind. I want to be like her when I grow up. Translation has gone fairly well. I am pretty much able to translate everything, with the exception of some slightly unusual expressions. I have, however, been dipping into Korean-Korean dictionaries to find the definitions of some words, which makes me super happy. Progress! I've also been working my way through TTMIK. I'm reviewing grammar from the first 5 levels. I'm not reviewing everything, just what I think needs to be covered again. Having not used TTMIK as a primary resource for several years, here are my opinions: I find some explanations to be quite good, some to be fairly poor, and the decision to place some grammatical points in certain levels baffles me. Why do the variations of reported speech appear after 을수록 and 려고 해요? Strange. Overall, useful, but I'd never, ever, ever use it as a primary resource. Finally, this was not a good week for French. I don't want to start reading any books in Korean/French until the semester begins and my listening practice gets pushed back until I don't feel like doing it. I'm just finishing up a pass through TTMIK (partway through level 9 now) and the part that baffled me the most is how long they waited to cover ~겠어(요) (which Pimsleur covers very early on). In fact, it seemed like they were actively avoiding teaching it, especially when they taught a ton of other future tense forms and never even made a passing reference to that ending. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

You know, I've actually never encountered -겠 as a primary grammatical point in any of the texts I've studied. It usually pops up in texts at a certain level and it's given a short explanation in a footnote. 끝. I'm still not quite sure when/how to use it - it's become one of the grammar points that I've learned organically and apply when it "feels" right. Having said that, though, I suppose I should go review it.
