Listening to radio shows before going to bed is genius! I usually listen to the radio while I'm on my way somewhere, but I'm also trying not to get run over by a car in the process.

Korean - Sogang 4A (10 words) - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban vol. 1: 183-302 (end) - 라디오 독서실: 2 hours - Radio Free Asia: 3 hours French - Using French Passive: 60-67 - Using French Active: 23-30 - The Princess Diaries #4: 16-110 It's been a very busy week and I've been really sick the last few days so studying hasn't been one of my priorities. druckfehler's recommendation of 라디오 독서실 was fantastic. The scripts are available on the website so I've been able to listen/read. Interestingly, at some point in the last week my listening comprehension has shot up. I am suddenly able to understand what my principal says, which is a huge improvement. My tutor and I have been focusing a lot on pronunciation recently. Pronunciation is truly the most difficult aspect of Korean. In my time in Korea I've discovered that there are two types of people in this country: those who understand what a foreigner says in Korean and those who don't. What's particularly disheartening is that I am actually quite good at learning pronunciation in other languages, so repeating 걸 50 times before I can actually place my tongue in the right place is frustrating. I find Korean a bit similar to French, in that syllables glide together. 다른 산을 등산할걸 그랬어. 산을 becomes 사늘, 등산할걸 becomes 등사날걸, 그랬어 becomes 그래써. And just for fun, here are my pronunciation notes for the day: ㄷ/ㅌ/ㄸ - touch your tongue to where the gums and the teeth meet. ㅌ is aspirated. ㄹ - lightly bite the tip of the tongue, with the rest of the tongue touching the roof of your mouth. Some of the literature excerpts in Using French have been really, really good recently, which makes up for how boring I find the rest of the book. A la Recherche du Temps Perdu has shot up to the top of my list of books to read, and Arthur Rimbaud's Le Buffet was similarly excellent. I'm excited to build up my vocabulary a bit more and to make a stab at proper French literature. 3 persons have voted this message useful | |

Oh, I had no idea there were scripts available for the show... That's great! I don't know any other literature shows like that, but radio shows I like are 유인나의 볼륨을 높여요, which has become pretty popular with the Korean learners recently, 음악도시 성시경입니다 which is great to listen to before sleep and for podcasts where the music isn't actually edited out I like 전진희의 음악일기 (classical and world music) and 이길주의 JAZZ IN. 장기하의 대단한 라디오 is fun, but fairly challenging and also long compared to most of the others.

Thank you two for your recommendations! I haven't had the chance to listen to them yet but I'll check them out in the next few days.
3월 5일부터 3월 11일까지 Korean - Sogang 4A (21 words) - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban vol. 2: 11-52 - Yonsei Reading 3 (13 words) - Iyagi #14 (4 words) French - Using French Passive: 69-70 (END!!!!) - Using French Active: 31-38 - The Princess Diaries #4: 111-168 It's been a rough week. I was really sick for most of the week so I had trouble making myself study. I learned all of the vocabulary words within the last 24 hours, which is when I started feeling back to normal. For the last few months I've been reading 15-20 pages of Harry Potter every day. Due to the upcoming TOPIK test I'm going to be cutting that number down to 5-10 pages a day for the next couple months and upping the amount of comprehension/listening practice I do. On a related note, I just signed up for a mock TOPIK test offered to anyone who has taken the 33rd TOPIK exam. It's free, it doesn't count as an official score, it's real testing conditions, AND it is a preview of the new test format. It's also two weeks before the 34th TOPIK exam (which I'd already registered for) so it'll give me a chance to work on my timing with the 쓰기 부분. I've finished the passive wave of the Using French textbook. I also went to Le Monde's website and picked a random article (about the Malaysian Airlines incident) and I was not only able to understand everything but I was able to translate it, too. I need to figure out a way to get in active listening practice from now on. I also need to build up my vocabulary. I'm not really sure where to go from here. Korean - Ewha 4 (15 words) - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban vol. 2: 53-102 French - Using French Active: 39-46 - The Princess Diaries #4: 169-178 (end) - The Princess Diaries #5: 1-91 It's been a busy week. The problem with my schedule is that I don't have many opportunities to study. I usually wake up early, work out, and study before going to work. I'd love to wake up an hour earlier to get a little more quality studying in, but I'm already getting up at 5:30. I refuse to get up earlier than that. I have time to study after work on Mondays/Fridays and on the weekends. But Tuesday/Thursday I have tutoring and Wednesday I have other commitments (a language exchange, starting tomorrow). I can study a bit at work but I actually have to, y'know, work. Excuses, excuses. I went to Gyeongju over the weekend and I was really shocked by the Gyeongsang accent/saturi. I'm used to the Jeolla dialect, which includes a lot of hacking and -는데 becomes -는디. People in Gyeongju sounded much more... brash? I think that's a good way to describe it. Less hacking and less of a musical sound. I finished Sogang 4A and my tutor and I have switched to the Ewha textbook series. I've used this book for a grand total of two days and I've already been able to spot the grammar (-는 듯, -대로, -더니) in the real world. I think this textbook may be a bit more useful for my purposes. So Team Gumiho is holding a 1.5 month challenge for the Total Annihilation Challenge. We need to do 120 of something. I'm not sure what I will do yet, but I'm leaning toward either listening/reading to 120 Iyagis or listening/reading to 120 clips from the Naver News website. 1 person has voted this message useful | |

Korean - Ewha 4 (24 vocab words) - Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban vol. 2: 103-200 - 4 hours of language exchange - 4 episodes of Secret Investigation Record (기찰비록) - 25/120 TTMIK Iyagis (#15-35) - 25/120 Harry Potter vocab words French - Using French Active: 47-63 - The Princess Diaries #5: 92-188 (end) - Le Ruvage de brunes by Nora Roberts (1-91) I was pretty busy last week so I didn't update. My studying was kind of lackluster for a good portion of the year, but thanks to Team Gumiho's monthly challenge I've really been pushing myself over the last few days. I've decided to do two challenges: simultaneously listen and read to 120 TTMIK Iyagis and learn 120 words from Harry Potter. I've done it for a few days now and I'm quite pleased with my decision. My studying is going great, and my listening is improving a lot! I've started watching the Korean drama Secret Investigation Record (기찰비록). Think... UFOs in the Joseon period. I've finally found a drama I like. Pity there aren't many others like it out there. On Sunday morning I will be taking the mock TOPIK exam as a preview for the new format. Two weeks after that I'll be taking the real TOPIK (#34). I haven't been preparing for the exam, and that's fine with me. I like the fact that I'm taking it as a reflection of my real skills. My Korean is far better than it was back in January, so I wouldn't be surprised if I manage to do well. Also, I'm passionately in love with 김혜순 시인의 전세계의 쓰레기여 단결하라 (Kim Hyesoon's poem "ALL THE GARBAGE OF THE WORLD, UNITE!"). Brilliant. Almost done with my Using French book and I don't really know where to go from here. I don't want to do the Assimil French Business book because I don't particularly care for business, but that leaves me without a textbook. Anyone out there have any suggestions? I don't necessarily need active skills, but if I could have very high passive (reading/listening) skills I'd be thrilled.
