Hi everyone,
I'm new but I've lurked here for years and followed many other people's logs with great interest and admiration. I've
self-studied several languages over the years but I've been inspired by the logs on this forum to take a more
organized and disciplined approach to learning Swedish than I have with the other languages I've studied.
I'm especially interested in hearing the community's advice on what the best learning materials and strategies are
and I hope that keeping this log will keep me motivated and help me pace myself. Let me know if you think my
materials and plan are reasonable!
Background:
I've planned on studying Swedish for years, but my knowledge at this point is limited to a few very basic phrases. I
know that Swedish isn't a "useful" language but I love the way it sounds and it's personally important to me because
my grandfather is from Uppsala and my best friend is from Stockholm. Like most Swedes, both of them speak
flawless English but (if I reach a good enough level) I think I can convince them to practice with me :). I also visit
the country pretty regularly and, through my family and friends, I'm exposed to Swedish quite often. Last time I was
there, I told my grandpa about my interest in learning Swedish and he gave me a bunch of old books of his (mainly
novels, but also some books in Swedish for learning English). It might be wishful thinking, but I'm hoping to be at a
level where I can at least start to read some of those novels by Christmas time (when I'll next be in Sweden) and at
least follow basic conversations.
Materials (I'm definitely open to buying more so I'd really love to hear your recommendations!) :
- Get started in Swedish (Teach Yourself)
- Novels and other material in Swedish given to me by my grandfather
- Mango languages Swedish (I'm not a big fan of online language learning but my school has a subscription
so I might test it out)
Provisional Plan:
- Two lessons Get Started in Swedish per week
- 2 BYKI vocabulary lists per week
- 2 hours of (subtitled) Swedish television per week for listening practice
I also love Dutch and have dabbled in it for years. There's a good chance I might be relocating to the Netherlands in
the coming year so I might pick it up again. If I do, I might occasionally post about it here even though the main
focus of this log is Swedish.
Thanks,
Neacal

Good afternoon and welcome! I understand your admiration for various folks on here (they inspire me too!). As you probably have read on this forum, many people are fans of Assimil language programs. Or what I like to do is check out materials from the local library system, and see what suits my taste.
One resource I have truly enjoyed is Gabriel Wyner's method of using Anki. His website is here: https://fluent-forever.com/author/gabriel-wyner/
Happy Learning,
Xenops
