I've adapted ALG ideas to my situation as a self-learner of Thai. You can read about my journey on my old blog. My ideas about ALG have evolved over time, so don't judge my approach from the first few posts. Regarding ALG, there are some more experience reports on the web, you should be able to find some links in the comments.

To summarize: I did a few weeks something else, but then I started my version of ALG and observed a silent period of 22 months with lots of listening and watching. Then I added reading and speaking, and later writing to the mix. I've never used translation or grammar analysis in my learning process. Following this approach was a lot of fun, and I think it was worth it. Listening comprehension and my pronunciation seem to be quite good (and natural), and I can have fluent conversations on many topics. I still can't express myself eloquently but I find my level after 4.5 years very satisfactory compared to other languages I learned 'the traditional way'.
