I have a question. For an English learner at advanced level, which is better, watching a movie with English subtitle OR a movie without subtitle?
For me, when watching a movie without subtitle, i can only understand 85% of the conversation since there is lots of slangs or slurred pronunciation. But with subtitle, I am busy focusing the words or expressions I don't know. It seems an unnatural way of learning. Any advice? 1 person has voted this message useful | |||

I think you've answered the question yourself.
If you understand 85% - and think you would enjoy it more if you understood more, then use subtitles. If you have a greater problem focusing on the subtitles than trying to guess the meaning of the missing 15%, then don't use them. 2 persons have voted this message useful | |||

@chenshujian: I think the usual advice is to watch it both with, and without, and that

Wearing good quality headphones helps you capture more of the languages, especially if speech is mumbled

I asked the same question before, and I took the advice which was to just keep watching without subtitles. If you can understand 85% without subs, chances are that you know every word being said, but can't process it right away. My comprehension went up and I no longer rely on subtitles unless it's a show or movie I really want to see and don't want to miss a word.
