Tonight I finished off Madrigal's Magic Key to Spanish. I read the entire book out loud twice. I felt like it helped a
lot of my prior study efforts "get untangled". I am so glad to finally put that book down and move on to a traditional Spanish learner. I did really like all of the cognates in Madrigal's book. I feel like I have a pretty decent grasp on the content of her book. - Now I'm moving on to Cortina's Spanish in 20 Lessons. I'm picking up where I left off which is around lesson 9. - Next on my list is Assimil Spanish with Ease. - Then Barron's Mastering Spanish Vocabulary & Living Language's Spanish (Beginner-Intermediate…just so I can say I read it). I'm hoping that after completing these books/programs that I will then have amassed a very large passive understanding to where I can at least understand most of what I read. I'm really wanting to get things moving in my Spanish. I went through a bout of anxiety attacks & depression a few months ago and feel fairly stable now…a LOT BETTER than I felt at the first, THANK THE DEAR LORD. I live in Alabama in the US and I only get to practice speaking with native speakers of Spanish maybe once a week on average. I'm hoping in the next year or so to have an easier schedule to be able to do more with my Spanish. Anyone else in a similar phase in their Spanish studies? 1 person has voted this message useful | |

I recommend watching Destinos! It's free, and really good for working on listening comprehension.
The truth is that - although I'm self-studying Spanish and I'm somewhere around a high B1 or low B2 right now - I never used any "courses". I just cobbled my learning together from a variety of sources: podcasts, children's novels, grammar workbooks (I'm using Practice Makes Perfect), Destinos, anki (I make my own decks), Duolingo. The most helpful things for me were language exchanges and Spanish tutoring sessions - both over Skype. 4 persons have voted this message useful | |

Those are all good language resources to start with. I've worked with all of them except for Cortina's Spanish. I've read the reviews for Cortina and it appears to be from the 19th century. It still could be useful for learning the basics of Spanish, but I would imagine that many of the expressions would be somewhat dated. There are also a few complaints about getting the audio to accompany this book.
I agree with Stelle about the Destinos series. It's always good to get exposure to the language through audio and video communication. It helps in role-playing and immersion into the language. I was at a similar phase in my Spanish studies, but I've taken so much time off that I will have to take a refresher course and start over again. I've also had problems with anxiety and depression, so it hasn't been easy for me to completely devote myself to language study. Diet and exercise have helped me somewhat in dealing with that. Sometimes I listen to my language programs while exercising. It's really been a therapeutic and liberating experience for me while riding my bike. 1 person has voted this message useful | |
