I was holidaying with my family in Darjeeling last month. I was hooked from the moment I heard the sweet sounds of spoken gurkhali. Nepali and modern Hindi share many cognates. They are even written using the same script. I have started with a couple of free materials that I found online. They include a grammar book entitled:"Nepali: A Beginner's Primer" by Banu Oja and Shambhu Oja. The audio for this book is available online. I hope to buy an FSI style book produced by the CIIL called:"An intensive course in Nepali" very soon. I'll post as soon as there as any updates. I was at a hospital the other day and the person sitting on my right was talking on the phone. In Nepali. Not only did I recognize the language but I also got a gist of what he was saying:
Being able to eavesdrop felt so exciting. And so wrong. :) Anyway, when I return to Nepali, I think I'll watch TV right from the start. Massive exposure. AJATT. Or, rather ANATT. :) I think I'll get the Spoken Nepali book instead of the one by CILL. Although both are drill(FSI) based, Spoken Nepali has audio. I'll have to order it from Nepal. I'm not studying Nepali right away. But I definitely want to get back to it someday. :)
