Hello fellow linguaphiles!

I was greatly inspired to join this message board by my fellow countryman IVERSEN, to
whom I credit with not only finding the forum, but also starting my own log. I also
frequently blog someplace else about my experiences, but I figured a working log on
just how the day-to-day language learning was for me, wouldn't go amiss.

I'm 25 years old and born, raised and currently residing in Denmark. I attended
international school and currently study a BA in English, which means that I consider
my English level to be almost equivalent to my Danish. Excuse me by the way if you
notice any grammar or punctuation mistakes, I prefer to write these logs in one line of
thought as I think that makes them more 'real'.

After having procrastinated about language learning for the better half of 10 years I
decided that 2014 was the year to finally begin going outside my comfort zone and begin
that journey towards multilingualism or hyperpolyglottism as is the word often thrown
around these days.

The safe choice for my 4th/6th language (depending if you count practical fluency in
Swedish and Norwegian as languages) would have probably been something like Spanish,
French or Italian. I have been introduced to both French and Spanish in school and
Italian is highly similar in structure and alphabet.

However, I decided to be aggressive and go with a harder one. Note that I don't
necessarily believe that any language is inherently 'hard' to learn, but relatively
speaking learning a language with a different alphabet to your own, has to be harder
than picking one that is using your alphabet.

So I went with Russian, and I'm currently working my way through the Michel Thomas
course, as I believe it is a good method to get a basic introduction on sentence level.
Once I've finished that programme I will branch out to sites like Biubiu (sp?) where I
can practice not only my vocabulary in practice, but also train my eyes in actually
reading the new funky letters that Cyrillic offers. I do know how they are all
pronounced now, but it's still hard to look at cyrillic and just immediately get the
sound - that's where the practice comes in.

THEN I will ultimately seek out people who are skilled in Russian and ask them to
practice with me. I live in a fairly international dormitory, so finding someone with
Russian proficiency shouldn't be hard.

Apart from my Blog and this Log I also have this dream about starting a weekly language
learning podcast that could be of entertainment and benefit to the people like me who
are interested in language learning, ninja tricks and just general thematic
entertainment to keep us company on this language learning road.

That was all for me in my introductory log entry, I'm terribly sorry about the length,
but now you know everything that's worth knowing. If you have any questions, feel free
to shoot them here or via email....thanks!

Velkommen til forumet Chris. Russian is a great choice, and I wish you the best of luck. I just had a look at your blog, which seems very nice and entertaining as well. I look forward to reading your contributions.

Thank you so much! It means a lot to me to have the support of like-minded people. I'll
be updating this today once I've had my daily dose of Russian, I realized my first entry
contained absolutely nothing about actual language learning that day, oh well, I'll make
up for it today.

Today I studied my Michel Thomas for approximately 45 minutes. I'm a big believer in
doing a little bit of learning every day, rather than cramming in a lot of studying
infrequently.

Today the lessons dealt with refreshing the pronouns, how they reacted with some common
constructions. It also continued with the yeest construction (there is) all of this is
a little confusing for English readers as "I have" is constructed as "By me"

I have (U Minja)
My (Minjere)
We have (U Nas)
Our (Nam)
You have (U Vas)
Your (Vam)

Another hard element of russian that shows up now is how the pronoun is changed
depending on the gender of the object that follows. Also the pronouns are also very
similar, which makes confusion easy.

It's definitely getting harder, but I feel like I can answer the teacher correctly 9/10
times, now its just getting used to the new structure and adding on more sentences.
Hopefully soon I will be able to post micro updates in Russian :)

Rest of the day I'll work on writing more content for my blog and probably relax a bit
in the evening.

können.
