This is going to be my first time keeping a language log, so I'm still figuring things out, but I'll start with a quick introduction; I'm 21 years old and was born in Wolverhampton, England. I now live in Groningen, The Netherlands, and as such I'm looking to improve my Dutch and I hope that 2014 will be the year that I can become more comfortable using my Dutch in my daily life.
Rough Level Estimation
I haven't had my language level tested, but I'd approximate that my levels would be as follows:
Reading - B1 / B2
Listening - A2 / B1
Writing - A2
Speaking - A2
My Weaknesses:
1. I struggle to find the correct words and I’m prone to translating directly from English to Dutch, and then trying to adjust the word order correctly.
2. I’m fairly shy / easily embarrassed, which can make interacting with native speakers rather difficult and / or awkward, and this is something that I think holds up my Dutch progress.
3. I find listening fairly difficult. Sometimes I recognise the words that are being spoken, but can’t come up with the definition quickly enough and then I tend to fall behind because I got hung up on a certain word.
Short Term Goals:
Finish reading Triptiek (Extensive reading) [Completed]
Finish reading Baantjer: De Cock en een strop voor Bobby (Extensive reading)
Finish reading Harry Potter en de Gevangene van Azkaban (Intensive reading, with audiobook)
Finish planting CODEPlus 3 (A2 – B1 Vocabulary) on Memrise (Currently at 67%)[Dec:73%][Jan:80%]
Listen to 100 hours of Dutch radio (Starting from 12.12.2013)[Dec:13][Jan:25]
Use my Dutch more! (I have a lot of opportunities to use my Dutch which I end up turning down due to shyness or embarrassment, and I really need to get over this irrational fear)
Long Term Goals:
Reach 3000 planted words on Memrise (Currently 2083)[Dec:2197][Jan:2326]
Read 10 books (Currently read 5 and I’m halfway or so through another 2; I don’t count short novels)
Reach conversational fluency (i.e. being comfortable holding a conversation without using English as [too much of] a crutch)
Ultimate Goal:
Reach C2 passive skills and C1 active skills

Great start NMW! How are you enjoying Groningen? It looks like you've already made so much progress.
With regard to the "weaknesses" you listed - 1 and 3 are simply a matter of practice, I think. I feel the same as 2 all
the time. If you start with small challenges (e.g., "Today I will have a conversation in Dutch with one person") and
work your way up, most of the embarrassment will fade.
I'm really looking forward to following your log!

Mid-December Summary (Starting from the 12th):
Radio (Hours) = 13
Memrise (Reviews) = 1362
Memrise (Plants) = 114
TV (Minutes) = 882
Book (Pages) = 81
Other = 5 hours listening to a group of native speakers; wrote two short posts
December wasn't as productive as it could have been, but I decided to take a little break to prepare myself for 2014 as I didn't want to burn myself out or get bored. I've been slacking on Memrise reviews (doh...) and will have around 700, yup... 700, to go through today... oh the joy! It's a good job that I love Memrise!
Het is januari en nu moet ik weer aan de slag!

Hoi NMW, hoe gaat alles in Groningen?
