So, I decided to join another TAC, this time with Dutch in mind.

About a year ago, I mentioned some resources of mine:
* Nederlands for buitenlanders (textbook, two CDs with audio, plus a CD-rom I haven't yet had a look at)
* Van Dale Pocketwoordenboek Nederlands-Engels
* Engels - Nederlands
* an early edition of Dutch: an essential grammar
* plus the bonus - Supergezonde Soepen

(I got everything second-hand for 325 SEK.)

I've had another Dutch grammar (in Swedish) for a long time (somewhere...), and the library has a more recent one as well.

I also have two other dictionaries:
Engels-Nederlands (Prisma)
Nederlands-Engels (Prisma)

And two booklets with 25 lessons each, they're called "Nederlands - Familie van Dijk, Eerste deel" and "...Tweede deel". Entirely monolingual, and apparently published by the Dutch section of the German department at the Stockholm University. Probably some decades ago.

Current skills:
Passive understanding of very basic texts and audio, especially when the vocabulary and sentence structure is very similar to either German or the Scandinavian languages.

Immediate goals:
Finish Nederlands for buitenlanders (and maybe the Familie van Dijk booklets)

Long-term goals:
Become functional in the language!

Methods:
Shadowing/scriptorium the Arguelles way. I had the first lesson on repeat and blind-shadowed it for ~15 minutes earlier today.
Writing short monologues in my log.
Text-chatting (when I have enough vocabulary).
Reading. The library carries a handful of novels plus a few children's books, I think. Then there is this thing called the Internet.

I haven't yet decided if I'll use Anki.

Thanks for stopping by, Hekje!

The lessons in "Nederlands voor buitenlanders" aren't translated, so I can't "thumb" the texts as Arguelles suggests. However, there is a multi-lingual word list next to each lesson (Dutch, English, French, German, Turkish, Arabic). Today I've blind-shadowed lesson 2 and had a look at the English vocabulary from lesson 1. I've also skimmed the first chapter in "Nederländsk grammatik" (Jaap de Roy & Ingrid Wikén Bonde), sounds and letters.

I browsed the library for something to read, but found only three books: one tome by Umberto Eco ("De slinger van Foucault" - way above my level), one book by Anna Jansson ("Midwinteroffer" - funnily enough, she's a writer from my area but I didn't feel like reading that, let alone in a target language); and finally a thin leaflet (at least it looked that way) about Swedes ("Over Zweden")... Mission failed. There is one by Paolo Coelho ("De heks van Portobello"), available in a week. Maybe I'll work with that one.

Another 15-minute session of shadowing today:
Lesson 1 English->Nederlands
Lesson 2 English
Lesson 3 -

Another 30 minutes with the grammar book: Articles, Nouns and Adjectives. I don't memorize anything at this stage.

I did some shadowing with this material when I first got it over a year ago. I also did some scriptorium back then (up to lesson 23, I think). Then I put the material away until the beginning of this TAC. But, while I haven't done anything with Dutch since Nov/Dec 2012 (!), I still understand a great deal when I study (or rather: review) the lessons again.

I will keep doing this shadowing and pick up the scriptorium where I left it over a year ago, which means I will start copying written Dutch in less than a week.

Hey Jeff!

Ik zie dat het goed voor je gaat! Ik ga je log zeker volgen aangezien ik benieuwd ben
hoe snel je de Nederlandse taal oppakt. Met mijn Zweedse studies had ik op een gegeven
moment een soort 'klik' en werd het steeds makkelijker om dingen te snappen. Ben
benieuwd of het ook zo is als je als Zweed Nederlands leert :)

Succes!

***
I see it goes well for you! I'm surely going to follow your log since i'm really
interested in how fast you will pick up the Dutch language. At one point I had some
kind of 'click' with my Swedish studies en everything just slowly got easier to
understand. I'm curious if it also happens when you learn Dutch as a Swede :)

Good luck!

Hey Jeff, I'm very impressed by your diligence. That's a lot of shadowing and reading! I'm curious: what's your
preferred time of day to study?
