I think Leonardo is the best example for this. He speaks 5 languages fluently: Portuguese, Italian, French, English and Spanish, and a little of Japanese.

Portuguese (native): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGkyOoHVSSw

Italian: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iJj6SgVJTYw

Leonardo almost fools me when he speaks Italian! He's very good at it, sometimes it seems to me that he was born and raised in Milan!

Francesco Totti speaks a very basolectal/dialectal Italian: romanesco.
Please don't copy this dialect if you study Italian.
Educated Romans don't sound like this:

he said: se sapevo che rimanesse avrei detto rimane
it should be: se sapessi che rimaneva gli avrei detto rimani!

Good piece of advice, for sure Francesco does not excel when it comes to speak Italian (at the same time, he definitely does excel in one other thing at least!!). Regarding the phrase you linked, I would not define it "romanesco" because it's just a very bad usage of the languange and nothing more, and, by the way, I would rather say: "se avessi saputo che rimaneva, gli avrei detto: 'Rimani!'".

About the accent from Rome, recently I've watched an Italian movie called "Nessuno mi può Giudicare". My listening comprehension in Italian is usually very good, above 85-90%, but that movie was REALLY hard for me to understand, since the story was in the suburbs of Rome, and the people's accent was just incredibly....strange, I don't know...

I think one of the reasons that footballers learn foreign languages quickly is that they are basically just expected to get on with it. A reporter will think nothing of sticking a microphone in a player's face and asking him questions in a language that is new to the player. The responses in the early days will be stuttering and full of apalling grammar but being forced to think on your feet is a great learning process. They have no opportunity to hide.

Born and raised in Glasgow. Speaks with a thick Scots accent.

He plays for Ireland by virtue of the fact that his grandparents were born there but in reality he's Scottish. The Irish have really exploited this grandparent ruling and several members of their squad aren't from Ireland.
