I have begun a new series of videos: Persian Textual Readings. It is my hope that these offerings by an advanced student of the language, in demonstrating good practice of the technique of reading and translating aloud, will be beneficial to more elementary students of the language, stimulating to would-be students of the language, and interesting to students of languages in general who do not have time to devote to this particular and particularly rich and beautiful tongue.

Thus far I have made and posted:
A general introductory preface
The Establishment of Democracy 1/4
The Establishment of Democracy 2/4
The Establishment of Democracy 3/4
The Establishment of Democracy 4/4

Just wanted to add a quick note thanking you for these videos--which I've thoroughly enjoyed--and to lament the brevity of our lives which deprives many of the privilege and bliss of mastering such a beautiful language. How do I regret not having begun learning languages ten years go.

I see you posses a very nice collection of Persian books. How would a regular person go about acquiring them? Maybe if I had access to a wealth of Persian and Iranian literature and scholarship, I could exert myself across German, Russian and Persian (and French, Japanese, Hebrew and Greek).

Thanks again for your contributions, which I for one have found very helpful and stimulating.

Saludos.

Professor Arguelles,

Excellent reading. Thank you for this post. I would definitely appreciate hearing you read more.

One little thing which I noticed you can do is practice your short vowel "a." This is important to get correct because the mispronunciation of this short vowel will often change the entire meaning of the word.

When you read the word در"dar" which of course means "in", I notice that you pronounce it as if it is "Dar" in the English word "Dark." That is incorrect, the spelling of this word in persian (as you pronounced it) would be دار"Daar" which of course means "has" or "having."

The short vowel "a" in Persian must be pronounced like the SECOND "a" in the word "attack." One way to know that you are pronouncing it correctly is that your mouth literally opens wide to make this "a" sound rather than tall which makes the long vowel "a" (which is the way you are pronouncing it). The short vowel "a" is an unusual pronunciation for English speakers, but of course can easily be achieved with a little practice.

Of course, this would be difficult to know without having direct contact with Persian speakers so I entirely understand why you have pronounced it this way. That said, as I'm sure you know by now, this short "a" shows up very frequently in Persian literature and speech so improving this one thing alone will immensely improve your pronunciation.

Please keep up the fantastic work and by all means contact me if I can be of any assistance.
