For me Macedonian refers to ancient Macedonian which has nothing to do with Makedonski,a slavic language.It also refers to a dialect of modern greek as it is spoken in the greek province of Macedonia.Calling this slavic language Macedonian causes a lot of confusion and it seems that all the above mentioned (ancient Macedonian,Macedonian variant of Greek,slavic modern Macedonian) are one and the same.Which they aren't. As you may know,this is a highly political and a very touchy issue in Greece.Neveltheless, the Makedonskis themselves call their language Makedonski.So what would be more natural than calling it Makedonski in English,too?Just to avoid this confusion with the names.And by the way no one calls this language Makedonski in Greece.The term 'skopiana' is generally used. 1 person has voted this message useful | |||||||||

In whole of the world people call it Macedonian. In all the Slavic languages the language is called Macedonian. When you say Macedonian no one thinks of anything to do with Greece or Greeks. Calling it Makedonski outside of quoting the Macedonian language is an insult to the language and its people, because in English that language is called Macedonian. To me there is never confusion: Ancient Macedonian (an unknown ancient language), Macedonian Greek (dialect of the Greeks who settled in Macedonia in the last few centuries) and Macedonian (the language of the ethnic Macedonian people). No confusion.

What an argument!It's like saying that calling the English language 'English' in a foreign language would be and insult to the English language and its people. Well,to make a long story short,you and the rest of the whole world can call it macedonian.I choose to call it makedonski. Could somebody be so kind as to explain to me what has the name of Macedonian to do with the topic of this thread (Ukrainian vs Russian)??
