Why do so many people on here choose to become a polyglot? I mean is it just because of a passion for learning languages or other reaons?

I didn't choose it, I have merely been traveling for a long time, and the developing
world doesn't speak any English...
So I guess this is my reason for continuing my studies.

Maybe I just like to collect things and to cover as much territory as possible? I don't go on holiday the same place every year, my music collection isn't restrricted to one composer and I like several kinds of pizza. So why shouldn't I want to know many languages instead of just limiting myself to one or two?

Why not, Voltman? Why limit yourself? Nobody says you have to master each one. Besides, I know plenty who have devoted a lot of time to several sports/music instruments/etc. and are quite successful (not on a world professional level, but still quite good).

When I was in my 20-s I was totally focused on the Dutch language and people gave me the hint that I could achieve more with languages in general. Later on in my 30-s I got the chance to go to university again where I could study Romance languages, so then I wanted to try that out.
