I was in St Asaph in North Wales over the last 2 days. In the dining room of the hotel
where I was staying was a portrait of an interesting looking man with full beard and
bright piercing eyes.
On the legend below it said the portrait was of a Welsh polyglot from the 18th-19th
centuries. It seemed that in spite of little formal education, he had managed to teach
himself at least 10 languages including Greek, Latin and Hebrew.
He is buried in the grounds of St Asaph parish church, and some of his dictionaries are
on display in St Asaph cathedral.
I forgot to write down his name, but google and wikipedia came to the rescue:
Dic Aberdaron
An interesting chap.
