I'm a Canadian currently living in Japan, where I teach English in the middle school, kindergarten, and day care of a rural farming town. I took a few Japanese classes in university, but didn't start seriously studying the language until I came here. I majored in Linguistics in university, so grammar is fairly easy for me, so lately I've been focusing mostly on vocabulary, both pronunciation and kanji, which I'm doing through anki (I'm currently doing the Core 6000 vocabulary list- most common words in Japanese newspapers). I'm also getting lots of speaking and listening practice just going about my daily life.

Other than that, I'm hoping to start picking up Esperanto soon (I have one Japanese textbook I want to finish with first). I'm in the awkward intermediate stage of Japanese right now, and I think giving it some time to sink in might help, so in the meantime I'd like to try Esperanto. Learning a language where the writing doesn't look like chicken scratch could be a nice change of pace. :)

Anyway, hopefully posting here will help me stay on track and not procrastinate from anki quite so much! よろしくお願いします!

Welcome to the forum, FullofPears! Your situation reminds me of fellow member kujichagulia. Check out his log Kuji's Krazy Log. Eerie parallel, right down to Esperanto too.

Thanks for the welcomes, and for that log- it's nice to know I'm not the only one suffering through the exhausting intermediate phase!

Welcome to our language forum kaj koran bonvenon! If you have questions about Esperanto do not hesitate to ask. Or have a look at our Esperanto subforum to get some ideas. Many threads there are written in English as well.

Good luck!

Fasulye
