Sorry if this isn't the correct forum as I'm after a book in English that will hopefully
give me the background to look at native school text books (primary school level) on the
subject.

Can anyone recommend a book that covers German or Austrian and/or Swiss history from say,
1600 to 1900? Some medieval history would be a bonus but just a 'nice to have'. My
current level of knowledge of central European history can be summed up by 'Black Death,
Holy Roman Empire, Unification of the little German states'. Pitiful.

Something entertaining or thrilling would be brilliant but I'm prepared for something
dry. Suggestions welcome :)
