That is why it is better to use Audacity, when you load a video file, it just strips out the audio part for you automatically. If you want the video as well, yes VLC is the weapon of choice. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I also use a Firefox addon to download youtube videos.
Audacity does not convert automatically video into audio - you have to convert yourself before using the file with Audacity. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

Nope, just did this again to make sure I was correct. Downloaded file from Youtube.com as MP4, opened the MP4 file with Audacity and did export to MP3. I didn't have to convert anything. However, if this doesn't work for you then you might need to install the FFmpeg extension. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

You are right I need this FFmpeg extension - thank you to mention it - but considering :
- on my compyter a 10 minutes mp3 opens in 4 seconds with VLC, in 19 seconds with Audacity - it gets worst with bigger files. - I don't need to download and install anything to do it with VLC - VLC converts from a video files, from a DVD - probably from a streaming source - VLC works with multi-track. 1 person has voted this message useful | ||||||

I have used http://www.video2mp3.net/ to turn video into an mp3 many times and it works well. After that, I use Audacity for further edits.
