As far as I know Audacity doesn't play any video format - so the only way to do it with Audacity is to play the video with any video reader and record the sound with audacity.

That is why it is better to use Audacity, when you load a video file, it just strips out the audio part for you automatically. If you want the video as well, yes VLC is the weapon of choice.

Audacity does not convert automatically video into audio - you have to convert yourself before using the file with Audacity.

Nope, just did this again to make sure I was correct. Downloaded file from Youtube.com as MP4, opened the MP4 file with Audacity and did export to MP3. I didn't have to convert anything. However, if this doesn't work for you then you might need to install the FFmpeg extension.

You are right I need this FFmpeg extension - thank you to mention it - but considering :

- on my compyter a 10 minutes mp3 opens in 4 seconds with VLC, in 19 seconds with Audacity - it gets worst with bigger files.
- I don't need to download and install anything to do it with VLC
- VLC converts from a video files, from a DVD - probably from a streaming source
- VLC works with multi-track.

I use that program: http://www.dvdvideosoft.com/free-dvd-video-software.htm
You can download Youtube videos, convert all kind of videos in a batch, etc.

I have used http://www.video2mp3.net/ to turn video into an mp3 many times and it works well. After that, I use Audacity for further edits.
