This thread at the koohi forum has literally hundreds of podcasts listed by genre. Many links
may be dead as it's somewhat of an old thread, but it's still running and being updated
regularly. They get you directly to the Japanese sites where you can download the audio for
offline use.The Podcast Thread.
Another place you can go to is Marimoeo. Three girls
talking about everyday stuff, but they use pretty standard Japanese that wouldn't necessarily be
female talk, and that guys to a certain extent can emulate without worrying about sounding like
girls.
I know you said you don't want to use iTunes, but it has such an abundant collection of podcasts
that it would be a shame not to use it. Just change your region (flag) settings to
Japanese, input "podcasts" in the search bar, and you'll get a bunch of them. Download them, or
at least connect to the site they're from, and you're good to go.
Good luck with your project!
EDIT: Found that for Japanese streaming radio
stations. You can also find Japanese radio apps if you own a smartphone, not
necessarily an Apple. They also stream from overseas. At least they seem to work here in the US.
