I found these Hebrew lessons and have been working through them.
I have noticed a few pronunciation differences between the male and female speakers. For example, he says "zo" and she says "zu". He also says the letter "ayin" as in Arabic whereas she drops the "ayin" sound altogether and just pronounces the vowel. Can anyone tell me if these are just random variations or is he for example Sephardic and she Ashkenazi and these are standard dialectical differences? Thanks! Which lesson are you referring to in your link? זו is typically pronounced 'zo', not
'zu'. The "ayin" sound is dropped in the standard Israeli accent, or at the most it is very very subtle. Anyone who speaks Hebrew with an Arabic-style ע is a native Arabic speaker (for example, Arab-Israelis, Palestinians, or Jews from Arabic-speaking countries). These people will also pronounced ח differently. It is not at all incorrect to pronounce ayin (ע) and khet (ח) this way (the "Arabic" way); it will just peg you as a native speaker of Arabic. 1 person has voted this message useful | |
