That's the idea! Have you started on the alphabet yet, or are you a total beginner?

I have started the alphabet. I don't know if I should just learn the alphabet completely
before trying to start translating, or if I should just learn the alphabet through
translation. What do you suggest?

Either way is ok, but I would recommend "Teach yourself Russian script" . I absolutely loved it.

I personally just learned the alphabet in a couple hours, moderately practicing the
sounds, and then went and read from there. After a week the alphabet posed no problems
whatsoever - pronunciation was another matter entirely. I practiced cursive script by
just writing down answers to questions in my TY/Colloquial books in cursive (instead of
block letters).

I can write cursive without thinking pretty much now.

I hate you :-) Here you take something I am still struggling with after years of learning Russian and tell us you
learned it in a week. Do you have any idea how depressing that is?

If it's any consolation, the fact I could make out the words doesn't mean I know what
they signify, and it took me MONTHS to get to good cursive writing :P I didn't start
writing cursive until six months in or so. I was too lazy to learn to read it, then found
it was more practical because joined-up means I can write quickly. One reason Hebrew
cursive script annoys me is because it's not joined up, and I write everything joined-up.

For the record, most people in my class I was taking learned the alphabet real fast. I
wasn't an exception to the rule.

What tarvos said.

My biggest problem with Russian is I'm so used to hearing it spoken, that it exasperates me not to be able to read comfortably, which in turns prevents me from doing what I'd call serious study.

I really need to sit down and nail that first.

Edit: What tarvos said... in post #28. Would you guys mind slowing down a bit? ;)

I officially hate you both :-)

The good news for the newcomers is that you may be able to learn it in a week, and if you don't that is still
just normal.

By the way, do you realise that we seem to have become the most popular team? I guess the fact that
practically all active members have chosen to continue tells people something about how useful it is to be
here. And we haven't even started to speak about the parties yet...

@mrwarper: Having lasted this long, you know we are on the cutting edge - also when it comes to speed :-)
