6 Week Challenge in February

Just want to make everyone aware of the next 6WC here on HTLAL: explanation/registering thread. You can participate with a beginner or lower intermediate language and log your progress here on the forum and/or on twitter. As far as I can see, there are already 4 people from the Asian team registered: Silbermond and Hidden Linguist are participating with Chinese, yuhakko with Norwegian and I with Persian. Anyone else?

Hmmm... that's a good question. I've enjoyed the 6WC I took part in last year, they gave me quite a lot of motivation to "spend time" on my languages, and spending time surely helped.

Considering it will only be the second month of this TAC, I think I'll pass on this one (I have Vietnamese on my bookshelf) and keep it for a moment of the year where I feel more like I need a break from the regular studies.

Or you could take part with your regular study languages Minnanhua, Korean or Japanese and get some extra competitive motivation, just saying ;)

By the way, any plans for the Korean TOPIK test in April? I guess the sign up phase is the same for all European countries - the deadline in Germany is February 6.

Apparently for London (which seems to have TOPIK twice a year), the deadline is the 15th of February... And the opening date is the 1st of February, never understood why there would be such a narrow window to send your application.

I'm not sure if I want to take it. It's unexpensive (25£), but it's almost guaranteed that I'd fail: I've spent the month returning to the level I had when I stopped last year, and I guess even a level 3 requires quite a bit more vocabulary, grammar, and above all, listening skills. Do you know where to find a convenient list of the vocabulary and grammar required?

I was contemplating taking the exam, to give myself some extra motivation to study a lot (+6WC?), but I'm wondering if it wouldn't be better to just keep a reasonable rhythm until the end of the year (rather than risking burning out). I'm still hesitating... Any thoughts?

I wouldn't call it convenient, but you can find the official list (8 pdfs) on my blog (first post).

To me, a reasonable rhythm sounds better. I'm sure that usually achieves more in the long run. 4 months to prepare for level 3 could be enough if you study specifically for the test, but I suppose you would have to focus very heavily on Korean. My estimate is that you'd have to learn at least 1000 new words (compared to the full Beginner TOPIK list) to stand a chance. It took me 8 months to go from "I have almost no idea what I'm doing" to theoretically passing level 4. If you're unsure I suggest that you look at a test, especially at the writing section, which I still think is the hardest of the four. Having said all that, taking the test is really a good motivator, so it might be worth it. Just don't get burned out! We need you here :)

I think I will give the 6WC a miss, i'm spending as much time as possible on language as it is and I have a busy
month coming up. Don't want to log my hours just to see how little I am doing! On another note i'd like to add
Khmer to my languages to study if that's ok Renate? I want to keep up my studies in this because Khmer is such a
developing language and there are new words coming out all the time.
