Here are the links to the Japanese music. I really got into Cowboy Bebop for a while and I love the diversity of music.

Yoko Kanno and the Seatbelts
The Real Folk Blues

I would like more Yoko, but most of her stuff is in English!

David Bowie (Half of the song is in Japanese!)
It's No Game (part 1)

Sorry for the slim pickings, thought I had more actually in the Japanese language!

Ooh, that's really a great topic! You know learning languages I always try to find songs in the certain language, since I like singing too, it improves not only listening, but speaking skills too, and your vocabulary... Lyrics just stuck in my head:) So really a fine thing? I can just recommand.

I'll list a few Hungarian favourites...
You can find all the lyrics here: http://www.zeneszoveg.hu if you search for their title.

These are all such classics an average Hungarian can sing by heart anytime…Or at least quote anytime.

Republic: 67-es út/Road 67/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b5S0K2LOn10&feature=related
Homonyik Sándor: Álmodj, királylány/Dream, princess/
(This song has a touching story… In the 80s, Hungary’s very first Miss Hungary has been chosen, Molnár Csilla Andrea, a truly beautiful and nice girl, only 17 years old, young and full of dreams… Sadly her story turned to bad after the competition, she was attacked several times by the media, and she couldn’t really just understand and get used to all the stuff which goes along with popularity and being well-known, so she took a lot of medicines one day, and they couldn’t save her anymore  She died. This song was written directly for her, 3 years after her death)

Piramis: Szállj /Fly/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0TgrHXa2kE0&feature=related
Omega: Gyöngyhajú lány /The Pearl-haired girl/
Favourite of foreign people… surely a beautiful melody, lyrics are a little difficult to understand even for hungarians, which makes it all a wonderful song!)

Bikini: Közeli helyeken /In places nearby/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kGS9v1bs3Ss&feature=related
Edda: Hűtlen /Unfaithful/

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0G3OnxmiPUg&feature=related
Tankcsapda: Mennyország tourist /Heaven tourist/
(this is the only song amongst the listed ones, which is moderner more or less, Tankcsapda is one of the most popular rockgroups in Hungary these days, and this is one of their earliest songs, full of truth, straightly about life)

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-c6EfceUu-0
István a király rockopera: Oly távol vagy tőlem & Szállj fel szabad madár / King Stephan rockopera – You’re so far from me& Fly up free bird
(Hungary has an epic rockopera since the early years of ’80s. It has a historical topic, our foundation of state and the beginning of christian compulsory in Hungary /it was compulsory then!/ then about a fight between the son of the country’s leader and his uncle for the throne…the crowning of our first kind, I. Stephan, so full of excitement and all this with wonderful songs… these two are deffinitely amongst my fabourites! I truly recommand this piece to Hungarian learners and for those ones, who are interested in our culture and history!)

I’d like …if someone takes the trouble to listen to some of the songs… I’d like if you commented them somehow… if it doesn’t really suits this topic, then send me a pm. You know, I truly am curious about your opinion, once they are actually my favourite songs, and real classics. Thanks.

http://www.myspace.com/30y Hungary. Also from Hungary, Hangmas, older stuff is good but new songs in English are not as good.
http://www.myspace.com/madsenband Germany, not sure how credible they are but 'Verschwende dich nicht' is so catchy.

wow! I've been looking at all these videos and saving them all, thanks so much for this thread! For my part, I'll recommend:

Renan Luce, a sort of mix of pop and trad french chanteur and very played on the radio right now http://youtube.com/watch?v=cngJbxOIuVs

Ich und Ich, catchy pop-ish German band. http://youtube.com/watch?v=SaY1WEcjlmg
