Would anyone have recommendations of really good, modern Swedish literature?
My last thread on French literature was so successful that I now have a bookshelf full of really, really good books I am slowly working my way through. I'm hoping to do the same now for Swedish! However.. I really don't know where to begin. I admit I know nothing about Swedish literature modern or otherwise. My wife was recommended The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (Män som hatar kvinnor?) as she is a fan of crime novels, but that is really the only Swedish book I know!
Any suggestions? There's a lot of Swedes on this forum--anything you read recently that you liked?
PS: By "modern" I mean more or less what's spoken today; something that wouldn't be a distraction to someone learning spoken Swedish. But I certainly don't (necessarily) mean contemporary literature. Feel free to suggest some classics! |

Män som hatar kvinnor is a good book. I have not read it in Swedish yet but I really want to. I also want to read Flickan som lekte met elden (the girl who played with fire) in Swedish because I have also read that one in English. I love Stieg Larsson and I cannot wait until the third book comes out in English. I want to see the movie and get all three books in Swedish because that is how amazing they are.
Edit: They are not that predictable actually. Yes there are some things that you can easily predict, But they are very good books (in my opinion).

A belated "tack" to everyone who posted to this thread so far! Real life has a habit of getting in the way, but soon I'm finally going to begin my Swedish quest. And I've got a shelf full of books to keep me busy and motivated. But if anyone else has any suggestions, please post them!
BTW, in the mean time I did read The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (in English), and I revised my opinion of Stieg Larsson and the genre in general. It's very well written, and not too forumlaic. I look forward to reading it in Swedish.

If you like poetry, I highly recommend Tomas Tranströmer. As a poet who honestly doesn't like most poetry, I can say he's one of the few I really really enjoy. Even more so because he writes in such a beautiful language :)

Personally, I am a fan of the Kommissarie Winter series by Åke Edwardson - the style is easy enough to be understandable even by a relative beginner, and the characters are interesting. I suggest you give it a try if you like crime novels.

An old thread, but worth resurrecting in my opinion.
After listening to the musical "Kristina från Duvemala," I've been interested in reading
the "Utvandrarna" series by Vilhelm Moberg. The excerpt (summary?) in the lyrics booklet
was not too difficult to read and much to my relief, most of the words could be found in
my travel Swedish dictionary. Would anyone recommend this, or is this some really heavy
reading?
