Well, "liv" does mean both "life" in the general sense and "body"/"abdomen" (where the "life" is, I suppose...), and unless it works differently in Norwegian, I'd interpret "og stak det gjennom sitt liv" just as "and thrusted it through his abdomen" (which of course leads to his death). This "liv" exists in other words, e.g. "livstycke" and "snörliv".
