The Goethe Institute is running a competition for international polyglots where the first prize is a trip to Parma to attend a Poliglotti4.eu conference and talk about their own personal journey in learning languages.

Our own very Torbyrne (aka Richard Simcott) has already been shortlisted for his multilingual video entry and is currently in second place. Hovever he's still far behind the leading entry and needs many more votes to catch up.

Looking at all the other candidates' videos, I couldn't imagine a better person to represent us in Italy next year. Richard is one of the most genuine and inspiring polyglots I know. He's always ready to encourage other language learners, and keen to share his knowledge and experience with the language learning community via his blog "Speaking Fluently" and YouTube account "Hyperpolyglot". What I particularly like about Richard, however, is that despite all his accomplishments, he remains humble about his achievements and would probably laugh abashedly if he were to read this post.

I know Solfrid Cristin and Fasulye have already drawn attention to this competition and asked members to vote for Richard, but as is the case with so many threads, these requests can get quickly lost and forgotten amongst the flood of posts we receive every day. Therefore I'd like to put out another plea, just in case you'd missed the previous posts, or like me, you simply didn't fancy logging in to Facebook to use the voting app.

The competition ends this Tuesday, 24th July, and there's only a few days left to vote now. My wife and I have already placed our votes today, and I think he still stands a good chance of winning. So if you feel Richard deserves a chance to win this competition, you can vote for him too by logging into Facebook, visiting the link below, and clicking the thumbs up icon under his video:

MehrsprachICH - Welches Video soll gewinnen?

Good luck, Torbyrne! :)

Update 25/07/2012:

I'm very happy to officially announce that with the help of your votes, Richard has won first place in the Goethe competition, and will be an Ambassador for Multilingualism at the next Poliglotti4.eu conference in Italy! This just goes to show how pulling together and offering our support can make a difference. When I started this thread a couple of days before the end of the voting period, Richard had 165 votes and was far behind the leading entry with waning hopes of winning; but with all your support flooding in since, as well as from other areas of the Internet and posts on this forum, we've turned this whole thing around and made it happen for him with a winning count in the end of 477 votes. I'm over the moon that Richard will now be able to represent us at the conference and help further promote language learning on an international stage. So a big thanks once again to everyone who voted! :)

The link doesn't work and I can't find it on Facebook. How do we vote for him?

Try this one: MehrsprachICH Voting page
Maybe it didn't work before, because there was "https" instead of "http"...

Thanks a lot to the two or three of you who have voted for Richard since this thread was created.

WE NEED MORE VOTES!

If you are one of the hundreds of people who have already seen us ask for your vote on Facebook, elsewhere on the HTLAL forums or on a number of blogs, PLEASE VOTE NOW!

Do not think that someone else will do it or that Richard just has it "in the bag" because he doesn't. The current person in first place (Banana Man) has 36% more votes. He has obviously got everyone in his entire extended family to vote for him because there are several contestants who made better multilingual videos, like Richard for example.

Vote here and get your friends to vote as well.

This shouldn't even be left up to voters. How can this program be taken seriously if they
would allow some clowns like those Turks to represent language learners on such a
platform? The Goethe Institute would only be tarnishing their own reputation.

EDIT: After watching another video - This Chiara person is almost neck and neck with
Richard in votes? If anyone can understand German on even a remotely low level you'll
have to turn her video off before the first minute. She has no idea how to use the
language.

Unless they're smart enough to choose someone like Robert Bigler, Richard, Luca or Prof.
Arguelles on their own then I have no interest in this conference.

Chiara at least takes the task seriously and is aware of the need to improve her German.
But the Turkish video... Well, I kinda hope they'll win, and those working in the Goethe
Institute will learn hard that it is really not a good idea to rely on some Facebook
voting. And this will be all their fault, as they could have chosen other videos out of
22. God, I hate this type of Internet contests ;(.
