Another point to consider when getting textbooks meant for university students is that older editions can be bought for a song compared to the latest edition. It's infuriating and morally dubious to me that some professors insist that their students pay a premium for the latest edition of a textbook when the second- or even third-newest editions (which are typically only a few years' removed) will ultimately serve just as well (not to mention put less pressure on the students' wallets).
For example, the latest edition of "An Introduction to Language (10th ed. 2013) sells for over $140 US used or new. The 9th edition (2010) of the text is a little better by costing roughly $40 US used at the least. The 8th edition (2006) costs about $19 US used at the least. Lastly the 7th edition (2002) costs about $0.25 US used at the least. If I were you, I think that I know which edition to get. Am I to naïvely believe that the subject matter for an introductory class in linguistics changes every 3-4 years to necessitate a new edition of a textbook? It seems like a make work project for the professors/authors and a way to keep the royalties coming (not to mention to help the publishers stay afloat). 4 persons have voted this message useful | |||

A lot are also available digitally. I try my best to buy second hand, if not I search high and low on the internet. If it's there, why not? PM me if you need any linguistics books in PDF format, I have a huge collection on my laptop. 1 person has voted this message useful |
