I'm hoping to become familiar with Spanish music, by which I mean any music with Spanish lyrics. I know very few Spanish artists, so I'd just like to hear any favorite artists the forum members may have in the category. A Veneuzuelan friend has recommended Juan Luis Guerra, and I'm fond of Shakira, probably not entirely because of her musical talent. Who do y'all like? Any genre, any time period, and region or dialect is welcome.

Colombian: Early Shakira (pies descalzos). I don't like her new music, too sexualized and commercialized. Bacilos, Juanes,
Mexican: Motel, Julieta Venegas, Control machete, reik, jesse & joy, Aleks syntek, Yurida, lu, maná
Spanish: La oreja de van gogh (with old singer, Amaia Montero), la quinta estación, Olga Román,
Dominican: calle 13, Aventura,
Panamá: Rubén Blades,

Thanks!
Sadly, I can't say that excessive sexualization bothers me.

I quite like Antonio Orozco, Ojos de Brujo, Omara Portuondo and the Buena Vista Social Club (I saw them live by chance in Oxford two years ago they were great), La Musicalité (cuatro elementos is a very catchy song), Diego Martin and Fito & Fitipaldis.
I listen to alot of these through this radio station http://www.cadenadial.com/multimedia/radios.html
The also play Shakira's songs on here along with Nelly Furtado, Roxette, etc.
Oddly enough none of this music is in my favourite genre which is metal. Any good Spanish and Latin American metal groups will be welcome.

But the buena vista social club is just music, right? When I heard one of their cd's I didn't hear lyrics.

I like Folie à trois (Spain) and Los aldeanos (Cuba). Interesting rap/hip-hop.
If you like punk-ier stuff:
Subir en busca del aire (Chile)
Asamblea internacional del fuego (Chile)
Arcadhianonstabian (Mexico)
Malevolentia (Chile)
EsconderMicara (Chile)
Carlton Banks (Mexico)
Leidan (Chile)
Also, Supersordo (also from Chile) are great :)
