Oddly enough none of this music is in my favourite genre which is metal. Any good Spanish and Latin American metal groups will be welcome. |

I can only think of Azeroth (Argentina) and Opera Magna (Spain). I can recommend last.fm to find more bands.
I noticed that my music taste shifts (or has to shift) depending on the language I learn. It's just impossible to find any Hindi metal.

I would also recommend tunein.com. You can drill down by continent/country and type of
music.
If you use the Flash player from their web page, it'll tell you the name of the artist
and song being sung, so you can look them up later for more info, and as you suggested,
Last.fm is great for that.

But the buena vista social club is just music, right? When I heard one of their cd's I didn't hear lyrics.[/QUOTE]
I originally saw them live and they had Omara Portuondo and two other singers (their names escape me) touring with them so there were long musical solos interpersed with great singing. It may depend on the CD the one I listen to has lyrics on it.

darkwhispersdal, you might like some of the bands i listed, though they're not necessarily metal bands.
Arcadhiononstabian - A veces siempre // Y creer que no es cierto
Supersordo - Terrorismo terrestre
Subir en busca del aire - Después de todo
Or some things a little heavier:
Hongo - Contemplando nuestra decadencia (Galicia)
Ekkaia - El desprecio a lo oculto (Galicia)
Blünt - Los últimos días (Galicia)
(i dunno if you notice a trend ;))
Also, Los Crudos are great:
Los crudos - Tiempos de miseria
There's tons and tons of bands out there, find some you like and look at bands they played shows with, influences, previous bands, etc. and you'll find a ton of music.

I really like the music of Ricardo Arjona (Guatemala). Maybe it's just me, but whenever I listen to his songs (particularly his older ones), they always seem much deeper and more substantive than most pop music in Spanish.
You may or may not like the music, but I would definitely suggest his songs if for nothing more than the fact that they often have a lot more "content" so to speak than most of what you hear on the radio today in Spanish, 99% of which consists of "I love you/I hate you/I miss you/you're so sexy." Ricardo Arjona's songs remind me a lot of the comparisons of older/newer Assimil versions; think of Arjona's songs as the older Assimil, with a lot of text, and detail, and nuance, whereas a lot of contemporary pop is like the newer Assimil, a lot more white space, not as much content, etc. :)
For example, here's one of my favorite songs of his, "Quien diria":

Just take a look at some of the lyrics, really great stuff:
"Quién diría que el mink y la mezclilla,
Podrían fundirse un día, quien diría,
Tu caviar y yo tortilla, quien diría,
Parece que el amor no entiende de plusvalías.
Yo trovador y tú estudiante de economía,
Tú con los números yo con la filosofía,
Y aunque suene imposible en teoría,
Al amor le importan poco las utopías..."

Some of my musician South American friends have recommended him. Apparently his music is actually "good" unlike some of the commercialized music that I listen to! :(
His music is never on sale on amazon, unfortunately. Maybe because there is such a demand for his cds? Aside: he was actually on the Guatemalan basketball team as a youth and played professionally.

Santos Inocentes - "Sonic rock"
band from Argentina.
WarCry - Power metal band from
Spain. They feel like the Spanish version of Iron Maiden or 80's Metallica.
Tierra Santa - Power metal. Similar
to WarCry.
Saurom - Folk metal from Spain.
Darksun - Power metal, Spain.
Labuat - Pop/soul duo from Spain.
Female singer.

Surely one of the glories of learning Spanish is being able to understand a song as beautiful as "Me Olvidé De Vivir," sung by Julio Iglesias.
