The best Rock group I've found
(they're Ukrainian and sing in Ukrainian though)
is: Океан Ельзи
They are amazing. Just awesome.
Reason enough to learn Ukrainian I'd say...
Also Ukrainian/Russian mix:
Verka Serduchko! Hop-hop-hop! ;)

I think there is at least one other reason to listen to Kino: They were really good. I mean who can resist songs like Pachka sigaret or Videli noch? (from 1986 and they sound exactly like The Smiths!)
When it comes to the language-learning aspect of listening to Russian music I'd suggest for beginners to start with simple pop music, which usually has easier lyrics, less slang and clearer voices than rock or hiphop. As you improve your listening skills, then move on to the harder genres.
Some of my favourites that haven't been mentioned already: Ruki vverkh, Reflex, Leningrad and everything that DJ Tsvetkoff is involved in.

I like to go to Zaycev which is a Russian site that has TONS of Russian music (and a whole slew of other music). Most is current pop music, but you can find older stuff like Kino, Tatyana Bulanova, etc. I recommend this site. They have a lot of БИ-2, which I like (among other groups). Sorry if this site has already been posted... If anyone likes ska, my friend's band from Moscow is Clockwork Times. They are great (and really nice guys!). I also like Distemper and Elysium.

As for Сплин - I'd call them Radiohead rock ;)
At least for their new album.
Скажи, что я её люблю (Tell (her), that I love her)
is an awesome song, and the video is really pretty cool.
That alien is crazy.
Oh.
Потап comes to mind, if you like hip-hop/rap.
The songs I like are Не пара and Крепкий Орешки.
The second song, Hard Nuts (in the literal translation) is actually him rapping the plot to all the Die Hard movies. And the video is him and Nastye (his duet partner??? She's also in Ne Para) in a movie theater watching Die Hard movies. Why Die Hard?
Well...Hard Nuts is the Russian name for the movies.
(How's that for useless trivia?)

Sorry, I didn't mean that the reason to listen to Kino was because the singer died. I just meant that that is a big reason for their ongoing popularity.
Anyway, some more Russian music: Tarakani, Prem'er Ministr (if they're still around), Korol' Shut. If you're into Depeche Mode/synth pop type stuff, you can check out Technologia, Arrival and a group that my mate's in called Fashion Suicide. They're not signed but have a very big underground following. Only thing is, they sing in English. End of shameless plug...
Minds gone blank again...

I watched an interesting documentary about the development of Russian Punk the other week. Can't remember any of the bands' names though. There is a band called Sektor gaza that's supposedly punk...
