Ken, where have you been studing Russian for 18 months?

Can you help me with grammar:
When you say in Indirect Speech, you should put a verb in the Past:
He said" I want to go there" - He said he wanted to go there.
But what about modal verb - must?
for ex. He said "I must go" - He said he ?(had to/was to) go.???

Marina,

I started 18 months ago just with two audio courses Michel Thomas and Pimsleur - but spent 12 months not
doing any at all! I am doing more now, about four to ten hours per week max, but this is only in the last 2
months.

Your question is an interesting one - the answer is definitely: "he said he had to go".

Natasha Bershadski covers this in the Michel Thomas course:

She explains that the russian way is to say what happened when the man was saying it. i.e. the reporter steps
into the reality of the man he reports about.

While the English way is to stay in the current reality and to put both the original speaker and what he discusses
into the past.

Both perfectly logical but you have to know which is preferred!

I have a book of grammar exercises with keys, and in the key to that sentence”he said”I must go” it’s written - he said he must go. I decided that that was wrong.

WELL DONE! That was the right decision. The book's version would always be understood, but it is not precise and
sounds slightly wrong.
