With the temporal meaning (past time "then") mostly used as a relative pronoun* :

(Han/hun) var der, da jeg havde mest brug for det, ....

Sometimes used as an adverbial demonstrative pronoun**, but then it sounds somewhat oldfashioned and 'biblical' ("så" has almost completely conquered this territory):

da skete det, at...

This last situation has developed into the third possibility, namely the use as as a 'pure' adverb which express surprise or indignation or - most commonly - that something is obvious:

Det var da godt nok mærkeligt! (= That surely was strange!)
Det er der da ikke noget ved! (= that activity is totally devoid of interest)
Det er da soleklart! (= It is as clear as the sun)

In the following expression the first "da" is best analyzed as temporal, while the second clearly belongs in the third group:

Da sku' da stå i det! (= Damned!)

* Most grammars only use the word "pronoun" about words which have substantival or adjectival roles, but that's in my view an artificial restriction. Notice the closely related construction "Han/hun var der just på det tidspunkt, da...", where the relative use is obvious.

** The same remark applies to demonstrative pronouns.

Artiklerne? Kun 'bare' navneord kan have bestemt artikel i form af en endelse. Ubestemte artikler og navneord kombineret med adjektiver eller tal har foranstillet artikel. Det er da simpelt? Det virkelige problem er at vide om et ord er fælleskøn eller intetkøn.

The articles? Only a 'bare' substantive takes the definite article as an ending. The indefinite article is used as a prepositioned "en/et", and the same applies to a substantive when it is used with for instance adjectives or numbers. That's simple, isn't it? The real problem is the distinction between "fælleskøn" og "intetkøn".
