The articles? Only a 'bare' substantive takes the definite article as an ending. The indefinite article is used as a prepositioned "en/et", and the same applies to a substantive when it is used with for instance adjectives or numbers. That's simple, isn't it? The real problem is the distinction between "fælleskøn" og "intetkøn".
