I downloaded a free German audiobook from audible.de today here in the US using my amazon.com login info
(onto my iPhone audible app, which lets you select which store to use, audible.com, audible.de, etc). I guess it's
possible Canada is just odd, of course.

There is also of course librivox.org, but that's only public domain works, and doesn't
solve the problem for more modern works.
Not so much audiobooks, but I noticed that amazon.de also refuses to sell me kindle
books in German, even the free ones provided in conjunction with gutenberg.spiegel.de.
Fortunately, I seem to be able to get almost all of these via amazon.co.uk, with the
puzzling exception of "Effi Briest", for which they only want to sell me a variety of
chargeable versions, even though I know full well there is a free PD version on
gutenberg.spiegel.de. This isn't really a problem,as one can easily get it from
gutenberg.org, but it's slightly odd, and who knows, the version on
gutenberg.spiegel.de might be "better" in some way.
I think that amazon.co.uk will sell me at least some German audiobooks, but I don't
know if I could get the full range that I might have been able to get on amazon.de.
I'm not sure if there is a specific Canadian amazon, or do you just use amazon.com
normally. It might be worth seeing what (if anything) you can get in German from your
normal amazon. These petty restrictions are annoying though.
@Blackverve: I'll send you a PM a little bit later with some other ideas.

That's useful; I didn't know about them. I see they have some e-books in both E-pub and
PDF. Does anyone know if their PDF's are DRM-protected? I've seen it stated that you
can't read a DRM-protected e-book on a PC that doesn't have a network connection, which
seems a bit bizarre.
