Hello. I am new here. I found these introduction treads so I thought I’d better make
one.
I joined the forum because I am learning Spanish. I study the language on my own, but I
did not start out that way. I had Spanish classes in secondary school (Gymnasium) in
Denmark. After that I didn't really use it for some years and I forgot a lot of it. But
then in the last part of my biology study at university I got the change to go to
Ecuador to make my master degree project and suddenly I needed my Spanish. I went to
Ecuador together with two other biology students. We started out with a two-week
Spanish course in Quito. I was impressed with how efficient a two-week course with a
private teacher, can be, at least when you have a basis to start from as I had. From
feeling I had forgotten almost everything to being able to communicate well enough to
get along. It was very different from the way I used to learn language in school. From
Quito we went to a small community in the rainforrest where I gathered data for my
study (an ethno-botanical study of palms) which required that I spoke to the locals.
Most of them knew only Spanish and Quechua. A few where eager to train their English,
but that was always on a low level. We spend about two months there.
After I came home from Ecuador I thought It would be a shame if I lost the Spanish
skills that I had acquired so I began to review a deck of flash card now and then to
check if I still remembered the words and I found Spanish videos on the internet or
talked to myself in Spanish. In time that evolved into a desire to not just maintain
my Spanish, but to improve it. In periods I have focused a lot on it in others I have
done nearly nothing about it. Now I have decided that try out a more systematic
approach. I have realized that I would really like to get to some level of fluency in
Spanish at some point. This forum has inspired me a lot and I will try to take some of
the good advice given in here. It's nice to hear about other people learning languages
on their own (I feel less alone with it that way). Also I think I have reached a point
where I really need to train some "output" as you would call it in here.
That is my story with regard to my TL (See I am starting to decipher the code in this
forum :-)) Hope It wasn't too long.
I'm awed at the amount of experience and knowledge about languages that is gathered in
this forum, both about linguistics and practical learning methods.
My native language is Danish and I would like to offer my help to anyone who is
learning my language. Maybe do some tandem learning with someone who knows Spanish.
I would like to start writing with someone in Spanish (or maybe I should start a log in
Spanish, I'm not sure about that ...)
By the way, about me: I am a biologist (currently without a job) and an active scout
leader. I like outdoor activities in general, I love nature, I like all kinds of
creative activities/ handicraft (from knitting to drawing).I also like reading books
(especially fantasy) and studying Spanish :-).
Edit: I won't mind corrections for my English, I may have some bad habits that I am
unawere of.

Welcome to the forum, from the former Dansk Vestindien. Tilia! Lang 8 is the site to go to to find skype language exchanges and to post in Spanish and be corrected by natives. Of course most people, as you know, are looking for help with English. Still, there may be some people looking to learn Danish. I'm sure there are Spanish-speaking immigrants in Denmark who would welcome such an opportunity.
If I can do anything to help you, please ask.

There are a number of Danes (and other Scandinavians) here, but even more important: there are actually people who study Danish - try to look at the language logs

Your'e from the fomer Dansk Vestindien! Cool! Is there any leftover cultural influence
from Denmark or any Danish words seeped into the language?
Thank you for the tip about Lang 8. I will try that.

There is much Danish influence here in architecture and some in the culture. There is no influence on English here from Danish of which I am aware. The Danes were always a small minority in the islands. Plantation owners in colonial times were primarily British. The dominant language here has almost always been English instead of Danish. In fact, we even drive on the left here.
Still, we do have a weekly charter flight full of Danish tourists during the Winter season. It would be nice to know some Danish and surprise them, but then again- they'll all speak English anyway, more or less. If you visited here you could use both your English and Spanish.
