Hello! My name's Ed. I'm a very recent forum joiner and a great language enthusiast. My great love is the Germanic languages.
I'm an Englishman, so English is my native tongue, but I live in the US.
During my BA, I did 3 years of Old English and 2 years of Old Norse.
I started learning to read Danish and Norwegian when I was 21 (I'm 37 now).
I have an MA in Scandinavian Studies, where I studied the translation of Norwegian and modern Icelandic, among other things, and I have a diploma in translating Swedish.
For 6 months I lived in Denmark (Århus), and for one year I lived in Sweden (Malmö). During this period I soaked up an enormous amount of Danish and Swedish passively. But I never learnt to *speak* the languages.
Later, I lived for 4 years in Germany (Berlin). Again, I soaked up an enormous amount passively, but my spoken skills remained basic at best.
I spend a lot of time reading and writing about language contact and lexicology in the Germanic languages, with emphasis on Scandinavian.
You can see my homepage here: http://germanic.zxq.net/
I read German and the Nordic languages fluently, but I am desperate to improve my spoken and written skills. That's the main aim of my current intensive study of German and Norwegian.
I think this site is really useful and I look forward to contributing more.
Ha det bra! :)

Herzlich willkommen hier im Forum, limey!
Wecome to the forum here, limey!
I can help you as a German native and I am language learner of Danish, so your Scandinavian studies are very interesting for me. Have a look at my post on your topic in the German subforum! And, if you like, also have a look at my "Dansk övelse log" in the Log Subforum.
I think we will meet each other more often in the German Subforum, I appreciate your first contributions there.

Välkommen til forumet, Ed.
Welcome to the forum, Ed.
I'm always happy someone else is interested in Scandinavian languages. I looked at your website yesterday and really liked the pages on loanwords.
