Hello everyone, 你好!I'm Tom and I'm 18 years old. I'm a native English speaker from
England and I have a passion for studying foreign languages. At the moment I'm
currently focused on Mandarin Chinese, which I'm studying at my local college and hope
to study it for a couple of years. After 4 months of studying I currently have a
knowledge of about 100 characters, probably more so I'm determined to be fluent. I can
also briefly introduce myself in Mandarin and I have a few Mandarin Chinese friends
from college.

I have taught myself Japanese but it was only for about 2 months and that was last year
so I may not be fluent but I can read Hiragana, Katakana and some Kanji. When taking an
interest in learning Japanese I bought myself an Oxford Japanese dictionary, a book for
learning Kanji and a Teach Yourself course. I found that Japanese was quite a challenge
to me since I was teaching myself and I've had difficulty finding native speakers to
practice so it was difficult. However, I've found Mandarin to be easy. I've been
searching the web for some time looking up sites for learning languages and I'm glad I
have found this kind of forum that deals with language learning. My favorite quote when
it comes to learning languages in particular or anything really is 'Knowledge is
limitless'.

I know some words from other languages such as German and French etc although I'm not
really fluent with them. I prefer learning Asian languages than European ones because I
find them to be more interesting in all honesty but that's just my opinion :P
