Howdy all!
I'm a 30-year-old Texan living life in San Diego, California. This is my language
story:
My parents are both Puerto Rican. When I was little, everyone in my family spoke
Spanish. However, my dad was also in the U.S. military. As I (and later my brothers)
started attending school, we began conversing in English since it was the language of
the classes and all of the other students. My dad was stationed in West Germany when I
entered elementary school, so we also learned a bit of German in class at the same
time.
After my dad was transferred back to the states, I forgot most of the basic German I
had learned. I continued speaking in English, even if my parents talked to me in
Spanish. As a result, I slowly lost the ability to speak and write Spanish although I
could still understand it well.
Fast forward to age 24. As a Mass Communication major at Texas State, the campus
newspaper assigned me to cover the American Sign Language Club. While covering the
beat, the members befriended me and taught me ASL. I decided to switch colleges and
majors to American Sign Language with the goal of helping Deaf and Hearing people
communicate. My husband and I move to San Diego in part so I can enter an Interpreter
Training Program.
At age 30, I finally have my first degree: an Associates in American Sign
Language/Interpreting. I work for a non-profit that specifically supports the Deaf
community here. During my work, I have learned that there is a great need for
trilingual interpreters here along the border, so I have decided to pursue a Bachelor's
in Spanish. It's another long term goal, but I don't plan on giving up anytime soon.

Welcome, ¡bienvenida! to the forum! Benny Lewis of "Fluent in Three Months" learned ASL to a conversational level. His posts may interest you Next mission ASL.
The Center for Applied Linguistics- Heritage Languages in America may also be of interest to you as a heritage speaker of Spanish.
Looking forward to your posts. Happy New Year! ¡Feliz año nuevo!

Iguanamon - Thanks for the links and resources! I had not thought about researching
sources for heritage speakers. I'm even more excited now as that will open up a new
avenue of resources that I examined yet! ¡Feliz año nuevo para usted y todo su familia!
Jolla - Hurray for fellow San Diegans! When I saw your username in other posts, I was
wondering if it was tied to La Jolla. I'm in Mission Valley, hoping to transfer to San
Diego State to get the bachelor's in Spanish with a concentration in Interpreting and
Translation.
